Framework, best known for making the Framework Laptop, decided to expand its offerings to include a 2TB SSD for Valve’s Steam Deck gaming handheld.
Valve sells the Steam Deck with up to a 512GB SSD(Opens in a new window), but what if you want more storage than that? Upgrading has always proved problematic, not because the upgrade is hard, but because the 2230 SSD required are so difficult to find. They have never been offered as a consumer product unlike like the larger 2280 drives are.
Framework saw this as an opportunity(Opens in a new window) because it already orders “a huge number of Western Digital drives” for its laptop. Putting some of that stock aside for Steam Deck drive upgrades turned out to be “relatively easy” while no doubt proving profitable.
The drive in question is a Western Digital PCIe Gen4 x4 2TB SN740 2230(Opens in a new window), which offers up to 5,150MB/s read speeds and 4,850MB/s write speeds. Stock is being made available in the US and Canada first for $299.99 while Framework figures out how to cater to customers based in Europe and Australia.
For anyone who managed to place an order for the SSD, iFixit has a detailed guide(Opens in a new window) on how to go about installing it in your Steam Deck. And if you have any concerns regarding how safe it is to use the SN740 in your Deck, there’s a Reddit thread(Opens in a new window) to put your mind at ease.

As of right now, the drive is sold out already, which just shows you how much demand there must be for more Steam Deck storage. Valve would do well to take notice and consider offering 1TB and 2TB models of its handheld as soon as possible.
