‘Stop giving my child junk for her birthday – I’m not being ungrateful’

A mum has ‘had enough’ of thoughtless birthday presents given to her daughter, blasting parents who insist on giving junk gifts or recycle presents they did not want

When you welcome a child into the family, you’ll often find your loved ones are keen to spoil the little one with presents. And as the birthdays roll around, the gift-gifting keeps going – sometimes even kicking up a notch. So families can quickly find their house is overflowing with presents, whether they like them or not. But as they say, it is the thought that counts.

Well, one woman has blasted people who insist on giving children presents only to deliver “junk” – as she thinks it is far from thoughtful. And the fed-up mum took to TikTok to make her feelings known in a passionate speech.

Expanding on her reasoning, she added: “I’m not being ungrateful. Don’t buy my child junk that you wouldn’t want in your house. Don’t give my child stuff that you have been given for a birthday present for your little one, then think you can give it to my baby.”

For the mum, it is about putting thought into the gift, which is what she always tries to do with purchases. “And if I haven’t got the means, I’d say I haven’t got the money right now, and I’ll get him or her something later,” she continued.

Emphasising her point with her caption, the woman again reiterated her belief that simply giving a present does not count as being thoughtful.

“I’ve had enough at this point. if it’s not thoughtful my baby is not in need of it,” she wrote, before upholding the belief: “It’s the thought that counts.”

And parents were quick to praise her post, with many echoing her sentiment in the comments.

One person said: “Real talk!! my son’s aunt bought him a tablet for Christmas despite me saying no to her over 6 times.”

“I’m glad you said it,” another wrote.

“Literally, If you’re not gonna make an effort don’t bother,” agreed a third.

Commenters also shared tips with each other.

“Always gift books don’t even have to be expensive even a cheap book is good,” wrote one person.

A second said: “I always just give cash or vouchers now because I hate getting stuff we don’t need.”
