A teenage driver who was clocked at 176 mph on Interstate 5 in Oregon told the deputy who pulled him over that the speed was actually higher.
The young man’s car, a 2016 BMW M3, caught the attention of a Washington County sheriff’s deputy at 12:32 a.m. on Wednesday, May 17. Southbound on I-5 in the Portland suburb of Tigard, it was recorded by the deputy’s Lidar device at 176 mph, said a statement from the sheriff’s office.
The deputy called in a description of the speeding vehicle, and it was seen exiting the freeway about 2½ miles south, in Tualatin. Two deputies caught up to the vehicle as it was stopped on the off-ramp and blocked it in.
The driver, a 19-year-old from Tualatin, reportedly cooperated with the deputies. He told them that his speedometer had displayed 183 mph, the sheriff’s office said.
He was arrested on suspicion of reckless driving, and the Oregonian reported that he faces a $1,100 fine and a license suspension.
The BMW M3 is a high-performance sports sedan. The newest model starts at about $85,000.
