Winter brings about a slew of things. For one, the colder weather means you’re probably spending more time indoors. For another, visiting friends and family—especially towards the end of the month when the holidays and the new year roll around. Both of these are excellent reasons to buy a new TV. It can make all the difference in your entertainment setup, whether you’re gaming, binging your favorite shows, or hosting a movie night.

If you’re looking to upgrade, the price difference between a 50-, 55- and 65-inch TV can often be fairly negligible, though prices do start to tick upward when you’re looking at 75-inch and larger screens. It’s important to fit your screen size to your room, though. Don’t squeeze a 55-inch set in a bedroom where a 32-inch will do for an hour of late-night TV before calling it quits.
For resolution, we recommend at minimum a 1080p screen, but most of us will probably prefer to take advantage of all the 4K programming on streaming and cable these days. After that, your inputs and your onboard speakers are all worthy of consideration, but nowadays the other main important decision is your smart-TV functionality. Roku, Samsung, Android/Google, Amazon, and others all have their proprietary ecosystems; if you’re already in one it can be hard to make a switch, so be sure you know what you’re getting in that Smart TV before clicking “add to cart.”
If you’re into gaming or considering a TV for the PlayStation 5 or Xbox Series X, look out for TVs with 120Hz native refresh rate, HDMI 2.1 ports for resolutions up to 4K 120Hz, VRR (Variable Refresh Rate) support, and HDR (High Dynamic Range) support. Not all games support 4K 120Hz or VRR, but it may become the standard for most AAA games like Call of Duty.
43-Inch to 60-Inch TVs
43-Inch Amazon Fire TV 4-Series 4K Smart TV
Amazon brand TVs feature easy connectivity with Alexa and a home hub where you can find your favorite streaming platforms. The 4K version displays content in 4K Ultra HD and supports HDR 10 and Dolby Digital Plus. Plus, there are 3 HDMI inputs to connect peripheral items like video game consoles.
50-Inch Vizio V505-J09 V-Series 4K Dolby Vision HDR Smart TV
This Vizio gives you 4K UHD resolution plus Dolby Vision support for a more dynamic picture plus full-array LED backlighting. There are just three HDMI inputs here also—worth noting if you prefer plugging in an interface that isn’t Vizio’s SmartCast—but you do have an eARC connection for a soundbar plus HDMI 2.1 compatibility for better refresh rates on your gaming consoles.
60-Inch Samsung Q60B 4K QLED Dual-LED Smart TV
The ultra-slim Samsung Q60B uses a Quantum Processor Lite in conjunction with 4K upscaling to deliver the crispest image quality possible. Dual LED backlights are dedicated to warm and cool tones for a more natural array of colors, while Quantum Dot and HDR offer an immense range of color and contrast. This TV can easily double as a monitor thanks to Workstation, a connection application that links a compatible PC, laptop, or mobile phone to your Samsung QLED 4K Smart TV.
65-Inch LG OLED B1 Series 4K HDR Smart OLED TV
Stepping up to an OLED screen usually carries a higher price tag than this, which is why we’re happy to see this LG 4K option that also boasts a lot of other nice features. In addition to the super sharp, incredibly responsive Nvidia G-Sync-certified picture with a 120Hz refresh rate, you also get four HDMI 2.1 inputs and 3 USB ports. Bluetooth connections make it easy to set up a surround sound system, and there’s even a Sports mode that’ll serve up the score of your favorite teams while you’re watching other content.
Both the B1 and C1 models share the same features and perform about the same, but use different processors. The 65-inch model of the C1 earned our Edtiors’ Choice award(Opens in a new window).
