Is your town one of the most bizarre cities in America? Could be, let’s see.
Gibsonton
Gibsonton Florida has the nickname ‘home of the freaks,’ mostly due to the circus freakshow performers known to settle here for retirement. The town has about 8,000 residents was a hub for circus acts and if you move to the area, they could be your new neighbor.
Alma
Alma Arkansas is home to Allen Canning Company and therefore, it’s Popeye’s Spinach Capital. At its highest, the company produced 65% of the world’s spinach. To commemorate this, a statue of Popeye and a Popeye water tower remain in the town. Every April the Alma Spinach Festival takes place in the city.
Albuquerque
Sometimes this New Mexican city is called Albu-quirky, so it only makes sense it’s one of the most bizarre cities in America. It’s the unusual sites and attractions like the coffee and faux-meth sprinkled Blue Sky donut at Rebel Donuts. A place inspired by “Breaking Bad,” no doubt. You can also stay at the Hotel Parq Central, a renovated psychiatric hospital with modern decor. What, no takers?
New York
If you’ve ever been to New York, or even seen it in the movies or tv, then you know that this is one of the most bizarre cities in America. It’s the people that make New York odd, women walking around without tops on and the Naked Cowboys of Times Square. Lots of skin in this city.
Thurmond
This teeny, tiny West Virginian town has a total of seven, you read that right, people in it. The joke is that at least sic of the residents have run for town office. Housely said, “This town has a definite creep factor all on its own though with so many abandoned and run-down locations, with no help from the seven residents who were known to live there.”
New Orleans
With a city slogan of “keeping it weird,” of course New Orleans is one of the most bizarre cities. There’s a mix of Cajun, French and Voodoo influences throughout and even Travel and Leisure readers voted it #1 in overall quirky-ness. If you’re in New Orleans, get a Voodoo massage, complete with ritual chanting and scents of absinthe throughout your massage.
Slab City
Slab City California is known for its lack of running water, quite the thing to be known for. A majority of the people living in the town have an off grid living situation happening and live a minimalist lifestyle. People still like to pass through the town and even decide to put down roots there. Randomly, the town has its own president and all the nightclubs are open-air, adding to this strange yes interesting and bizarre city.
How about those hotel rooms renovated from a psychiatric hospital with modern decor? Want to see more bizarre cities from all over the United States.
