Threads Is Coming to the Web

You’ll soon be able to access Threads from the web.

If you go to Threads.net(Opens in a new window) right now, you find a small collection of posts about the app and how to download it. That may change soon as Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg on Friday said(Opens in a new window) that search and web access are coming to the company’s Twitter alternative.

The move might help Threads retain users. The app initially saw a huge surge in signups—jumping to 100 million users on July 10, just a few days after its launch, faster than any consumer software product in history. But its user base has dropped steadily since.

Last Sunday, the app’s active users on Android dropped to 12.6 million, according to internet traffic tracker Similarweb, a 74% dip from the 49 million users Threads had the day after launch.

Nonetheless, during Meta’s second-quarter earnings call with investors in July, Zuckerberg indicated that he thought Threads has the potential to reach 1 billion users.

Zuckerberg has said that the company now has a focus on adding missing features to the somewhat barebones app, like web access and search. It’s also working on strategies to help it retain users on the platform going forward.
