MANILA, Philippines—University of Santo Tomas opened Saturday’s game day at Mall of Asia Arena with a dominant win over Adamson in the UAAP Season 87 men’s volleyball tournament.

The Golden Spikers convincingly beat the Soaring Falcons, 25-18, 25-15, 25-23, behind the efforts of UST newcomers Alche Gupiteo and JJ Macam.

“We just trusted one another and played with maturity inside the court. I think it’s also a factor that we played with high energy in the third set since we played low in the beginning. Our happiness pushed us to victory,” said the young gun Gupiteo.

Gupiteo finished with 13 points built on eight spikes and five blocks to push UST to a 3-1 record. Macam, meanwhile, also recorded 13 points to his name in the victory.

Adamson’s tandem of Marc Paulino and jude Aguilar finished with seven points a piece but to no avail as the Soaring Falcons dropped to 1-3 for the season.

National University, meanwhile, needed four sets to outlast University of the East, 25-20, 23-25, 25-23, 25-25, to tie with UST in the standings at an identical 3-1 card.

Leo Ordiales led the cavalry with 18 points while the duo of Michaelo Buddin and Leo Aringo chipped in 16 and 15 points, respectively, in the win that sent NU and UST in a logjam for the second seed.

The Red Warriors, meanwhile, remained winless after four games but not without the efforts of Roy Gabriel Pojo and John Steve Aligayon, who finished with 18 and 15 points, respectively.
