Elon Musk has a new adversary—the latest Assassin’s Creed game and its developer, Ubisoft.
Assassin’s Creed Shadows has faced criticism from those who say including a Black samurai and a female ninja as the game’s main protagonists promotes a “woke” agenda. On Tuesday, Musk added his two cents on X. Shadows is a “terrible game” that Ubisoft is paying game streamer “HasanAbi” to promote, he wrote in a tweet that calls the streamer a “sell out.”
In response, Ubisoft roasted the billionaire by bringing up reports that Musk pays people to level up his characters in Diablo 4 and Path of Exile 2. “Is that what the guy playing your Path of Exile 2 account told you?” the X account for Assassin’s Creed tweeted.

Musk previously boasted to podcaster Joe Rogan about being the world’s top Diablo 4 player despite being the CEO of SpaceX and Tesla. But in January, a YouTuber publicly shared direct messages with Musk, in which the CEO conceded to the account boosting, saying it was necessary to help him compete with players from Asia.
The confession hurt Musk’s standing in the gaming community, with some even calling for his accounts on Diablo 4 and Path of Exile 2 to be banned for cheating.
So far, Ubisoft’s clapback tweet has over 34 million views and 577,000 likes. Meanwhile, Musk’s original tweet has only received over 4 million views and 30,000 likes.
Critics argue that Assassin’s Creed Shadows takes too many liberties with Japanese history. Ubisoft says the game’s plot is meant to be “historical fiction” while offering a respectful portrayal of feudal Japan. For example, the Black samurai in the game, Yasuke, is based on a real 16th-century historical figure of the same name who hailed from Africa.

Ubisoft also notes that all the games in the Assassin’s Creed franchise are historical fiction. In another tweet seemingly directed at Musk, the company wrote: “Where other men blindly follow the truth… Remember, nothing is true.”
Musk may respond with a game of his own. In November, he tweeted about creating a studio through his startup xAI, a rival to OpenAI. “Too many game studios…are owned by massive corporations. xAI is going to start an AI game studio to make games great again!” he said.
