UEFA Nations League Finals 2022/23: Teams, matches, host country and format

The 2022/23 UEFA Nations League might be being played in the shadow of a World Cup but it has still delivered plenty of drama.

From England getting relegated to France’s surprise struggles, the competition has served up some great matches this year.

With group games now concluded, all attention now turns to the UEFA Nations League Finals. 

The Sporting News breaks down all the information about what comes next in the European competition.

When are the UEFA Nations League Finals?

The 2022/23 UEFA Nations League Finals will begin on June 14, 2023 with the first semi-final. 

The decisive game will then be played four days later on June 18, 2023. 

France triumphed in the most recent Nations League Finals when they beat Spain 2-1 in 2021.

Which teams have qualified for the UEFA Nations League Finals?

  • Croatia
  • Italy
  • Netherlands
  • Spain

The above four nations all finished top of their respective League A groups. 

None of the teams have won the competition before with Croatia reaching the finals stage for the first time. 

Spain finished runners-up in 2021, while Netherlands also had to settle for second-place in 2019. 

The Dutch head into the finals with the best group record having not lost any of their six games. 

Where will the UEFA Nations League Finals be played?

Belgium, Netherlands, Poland and Wales all declared interest in hosting the 2022/23 UEFA Nations League Finals.

The four nations were in the same group with Netherlands coming out on top and now expected to get hosting rights as a result. 

UEFA will confirm the host in January 2023 with final bids for hosting rights needing to be submitted by October 5, 2022. 

How do the UEFA Nations League Finals work?

The 2022/23 Nations League Finals will consist of semi-finals, a third-place playoff and final.

All games will be played over one leg with semi-final fixtures to be determined via an open draw. 

Both the semi-finals and final will use extra-time and a penalty shootout if required, but the third-place match will go straight to penalties.

Portugal and France have won the two previous UEFA Nations League Finals.

No date as yet has been set for the UEFA Nations League Finals draw. 

No teams will be seeded for the draw when it is conducted, but if a host country is participating they will be allocated to play in the first semi-final.
