Since losing to Kamaru Usman in 2015, Leon Edwards has become an elite contender at welterweight in the UFC. All these years later, he is ready to fight for welterweight gold against the man who beat him.
Edwards is challenging Usman for the title at UFC 278 on Saturday inside Vivint Arena in Salt Lake City,
Edwards has gone 9-0 with one no-contest since the first Usman fight. His journey has been inspirational, and he can’t wait to make the most of this opportunity.
“I didn’t grow up dreaming of being the champion or anything like that, because I didn’t know anything about it,” Edwards told Yahoo Sports. “It was all about survival. If I can do this, though, it would mean the world to mean. It’s such an amazing story. I came from extremely humble beginnings in Jamaica and for most of my life, there was trouble everywhere I turned. And now, to be here with an opportunity to have that UFC belt put around my waist in a couple of days, that’s the kind of story they talk about in the movies. It’s amazing.”
