On September 10 at UFC 279, Nate Diaz faces off against Khamzat Chimaev. The fight will take place inside the T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas. It is the last bout of Diaz’s deal with the UFC.
Despite being a massive favorite against Diaz (-1100 to +700 according to the FanDuel Sportsbook), Chimaev told Ariel Helwani on The MMA Hour he is not looking to discredit Diaz.
“Who cares about that? For me, it doesn’t matter,” Chimaev stated, via MMA News. “When I was beginning my career, I was fighting a guy (who was) 8-0. He was world champion, something like that. Some guys from my country (said), ‘Oh, that guy’s gonna beat you,’ and (I was only 1-0.).
“And now, people are saying, ‘Oh, you’re gonna win the fight.’ But Diaz lost his fights. That’s why I think he’s underdog. If he was on winning streak, this has to be like 50-50. People gonna think like, ‘Oh, he’s also good shape.’ Now, everyone talking the guy’s like old, this shit. But it’s still a fight. Fighting is dangerous, you know? I’m just happy to fight with that guy.”

A silver medalist in the Pan American Jiu-Jitsu Championships, Diaz made his pro debut in 2004 for WEC. The 37-year-old won “The Ultimate Fighter” in 2007. Diaz is 14-11 with the UFC. He has competed against Clay Guida, Donald Cerrone, Jim Miller, Gray Maynard, and Conor McGregor. Diaz is on a two-fight losing streak; he last fought in 2021 against Leon Edwards at UFC 263.
Chimaev joined the UFC in 2020 and won three fights for the promotion that year. Chimaev took the MMA world by storm with his skills and killer mindset.
The man born in Chechnya suffered complications after testing positive for COVID-19 in 2020, forcing multiple bouts against Edwards to be nixed. At one point he considered retirement after coughing up blood. Chimaev finally returned in October 2021 and beat Li Jingliang via submission. Chimaev’s last fight was a unanimous decision win in April over Gilbert Burns. He is currently ranked third in the UFC’s welterweight rankings.
