UK’s most commonly misspelt names revealed – see full list and check if yours is there

Thousands of Google searches are made every month for how to spell particular boys’ and girls’ names, with people also baffled on how to spell the monikers of several Royals too

Brits named either Niamh or Aaron have the most commonly misspelt names, according to new research.

Google search data says people are so flummoxed on how to spell the Irish moniker properly they search online thousands of times a month to get it right.

The spelling of Niamh – which means bright – had 4,110 monthly searches in the UK alongside other variations including Neve, Nieve, Neave, Neavh or Neeve.

The study by Unscrambled Words also discovered the second name which gives people the most issues is Rachel, with 2,770 Google searches being made each month by Brits for the correct spelling of the name, with some confused with Rachael.

The top boys’ name causing people to look it up is Aaron, with 2,670 times searches a month on average.

A spokeswoman from Unscrambled Words said of the study: “Every name can be spelled in various ways, which can often make the name more sentimental or unique.

“However, it is fascinating to see which names have Brits the most confused when it comes to their spelling, as many on the list are incredibly popular.”

Several royal names appear in the top ten lists of both men and women.

Margaret is the fourth highest searched for name with 2, 410 a month.

Other royal monikers include Diana, which ranks as the eighth most misspelt girls name and thirteenth overall with 990 monthly searches and Louise, with 810 monthly searches.

Of the royal children Charlotte has 790 monthly searches for the correct name spelling and 750 people searched for how to spell George a month.

The fifth most misspelt name by Brits is Sheila. The name which means ‘heavenly’ has variations of Shelagh and Sheelagh and has 2,150 monthly average searches for the correct spelling.

Girls’ names appeared to be more difficult to spell with 70% of the top ten names female.
