Give yourself and loved ones the gift of knowledge this holiday season with a 23andMe Personal Genetic DNA Test, on sale from Amazon for up to 37% off.
Whether you’ve been trying to fill in the family tree for years or caught the ancestry bug from an episode of Who Do You Think You Are?, this PCMag Editors’ Choice testing service offers a trove of information about your genetics and deeper ancestry.
Choose between two types of kits: 23andMe Health + Ancestry(Opens in a new window) (currently $129) or 23andMe+ Premium Membership Bundle(Opens in a new window) (currently $144). Both test for five genetic health risks and detail your carrier status for more than 40 diseases. For $15 more, you can tap into a year-long membership with perks like DNA insights.
The service also features Wellness and Traits reports, gauging things like your genetic predisposition for being above or below average weight and the likelihood of hair loss. It’s important to note, as 23andMe discloses, these tests provide more information about potential health concerns, but are not a guaranteed vision of the future.
Once activated, the collection kit requires users to spit into a tube that’s returned via prepaid envelope to the lab. Expect a short wait until preliminary results are ready, and another week or so until you can see the full reports, which cover ancestry composition, maternal and paternal lines, and Neanderthal ancestry (which may explain a fear of heights or easy blushing).
23andMe looks for DNA matches among its other members—assuming you opt in. Depending on the privacy settings of your matches, you may be able to see their name, pictures, sex, birth country, family surname, family locations, and haplogroups, and even send a message.
