The United States were always facing an uphill battle at the World Cup against the No. 8-ranked Netherlands in the Round of 16, but it felt like they had a chance to see their way through to their second-ever quarterfinal berth.
Instead, they fell short, defeated 3-1 on goals from Memphis Depay, Daley Blind, and Denzel Dumfries.
The finishing in front of goal made the difference, as the Dutch capitalized on their three best chances, while the United States missed a host of good opportunities.
It started early, as Christian Pulisic saw a massive opportunity go begging in just the third minute, saved by Andries Noppert.
From then on, the Netherlands punished the United States for every mistake, as defensive lapses and attacking frailties continued to haunt them. On the whole, the U.S. created waves of chances at various points in the game, but scored just once on a wild bounce off the foot of substitute Haji Wright.
The Netherlands move on to the quarterfinals, where they will face either Argentina or Australia, while the United States remain with just one quarterfinal appearance at a World Cup in their history.

FULLTIME: USA 1 Netherlands 3
At the end of the day, the U.S. produced a positive performance, creating plenty of chances, but it’s finishing that lets them down. The Netherlands, just as they did in the group stage, capitalized on every opportunity they created, while the United States failed to match that incisive nature. Pulisic’s big miss early looms large, as does Haji Wright’s down the stretch.
At the other end, defensively the Netherlands stood tall and made key tackles and blocks when needed, while the U.S. fell apart at bad moments, losing track of runners and far-post lurkers. There’s room to grow for this young United States team, but they have to cut down on mistakes.
USA vs Netherlands: Second half
90+4 min: Chance, USA! The Dutch can’t clear it, but there’s a pair of efforts blocked! First, it’s Jordan Morris who slides to meet it at the near post but he’s bodied off, and then it bobbles to Gio Reyna, who heads to Yunus Musah for a wallop, but it’s rejected. Time running out.
90+3 min: Great block by Frenkie de Jong to deny a scything cut-back from Yunus Musah which was headed for an unmarked American at the top of the penalty area. Netherlands make a pair of substitutions, with Cody Gakpo and Nathan Ake coming off in favor of Matthijs de Ligt and Wout Weghorst.
90+1 min: Jordan Morris comes on for Antonee Robinson in last chance saloon for the United States. There’s six minutes of stoppage time, and it feels like it’s most certainly not enough.
85th min: A brilliant throughball from Christian Pulisic nearly finds Haji Wright but Virgil van Dijk just barely recovers to toe poke it out for a corner. On the set-piece, the ball finds Walker Zimmerman, who goes for a desperation bicycle kick, but it comes off exactly how you’d expect a 6-foot-3 defender doing a bike would go.
81st min: GOAL! NETHERLANDS! The Dutch have been on their heels, but the U.S. fall totally asleep defensively and concede an awful goal, scored by Denzel Dumfries at the far post, all alone to meet the cross of Daley Blind. Tim Ream completely lost track of his man at the far post, and DeAndre Yedlin was nowhere to be found. It’s a dagger.

78th min: Chance, USA! WOW, Noppert has been sensational! He comes way out of net off his line to clear the ball off the feet of a streaking Gio Reyna. If he gets the sliding tackle wrong, it’s a red and he’s off, but he’s johnny on the spot!
76th min: GOAL! USA! ITS THE SILLIEST GOAL YOU’LL EVER SEE, but the U.S. won’t care! As a corner from Christian Pulisic is cleared, it comes back at the Dutch and Pulisic again sends it in with a horizontal cross. Haji Wright gets what appears to be an accidental touch on the ball as he’s bundled over by a defender, and it loops over the goalkeeper and in! HOW?!
After the goal, Memphis Depay is subbed off for Xavi Simons.

75th min: Chance, USA! Haji Wright is IN after a horrible back-pass from Memphis Depay, but Wright’s first touch is a DISASTER, and the chance goes begging! Second time tonight the U.S. has had a great chance but it’s gone.

Sergino Dest comes off for DeAndre Yedlin.
74th min: Gio Reyna has a wild hit from atop the penalty area, having glided past Virgil van Dijk, but he’s challenged hard by Teun Koopmeiners and the effort goes flying way wide, nowhere close. Gio’s slow to get up, as the U.S. have taken a beating in this match.
72nd min: Chance, Netherlands! TURNER AGAIN! Teun Koopmeiners has a hit from very deep, and Turner gets down to save it to his right. The rebound comes to Memphis Depay, and his scrambling header is on frame, but Turner wrestles himself up to deny a second attempt. Brilliant moment from the U.S. goalkeeper.
Watch in the USA:

— FOX Soccer (@FOXSoccer) December 3, 2022
70th min: The U.S. looks to be in panic mode. They’re struggling to maintain a physical presence against a very well-drilled Netherlands side that looks quite comfortable. Jedi Robinson produces another great tackle to dispossess Denzel Dumfries, conceding a corner, which meets the head of Virgil van Dijk but his effort goes over the crossbar.
67th min: Haji Wright and Brenden Aaronson are on, with Weston McKennie and Tim Weah off. They’re the right changes, necessary from Gregg Berhalter. Can the U.S. find two late goals?
Aaronson’s first action is to be muscled off the ball by Jurrien Timber, and then commits the foul on the Ajax youngster.
63rd min: Antonee Robinson takes down Denzel Dumfries in the penalty area on the break, and both players are down injured. The Dutch are screaming for a penalty but the official waves play on. Both players take ages to get up gingerly.
U.S. have subs warming on the touchline, looks like Haji Wright. Antonee Robinson is down and needs treatment, which would be a huge loss for the U.S.
61st min: Chance, Netherlands! SAVE, TURNER! He tips a great Memphis hit from distance over the crossbar!
59th min: The United States has a good free-kick opportunity from deep just off to the left as Christian Pulisic is fouled, but his ball into the penalty area has nobody in white there to meet it, and it’s cleared.
There’s a second free-kick for the U.S. from a similar position moments later, and this time Pulisic drives it, but it can’t beat the first man. The U.S. have been disappointing on set-pieces this tournament. Teun Koopmeiners gets a yellow for his foul on the set-piece.
53rd min: Chance, USA! Weston McKennie fires over the crossbar! Gio Reyna’s involved down the left, and he cuts back to the Juventus midfielder at the top of the penalty area, but rifles just inches over the crossbar. He lets out a primal yell after. The U.S. are playing with a ton of emotion, but have no goals to show for it yet.

50th min: Chance, Netherlands! MATT TURNER SAVE! Somehow Walker Zimmerman gets beaten to a cross by Memphis Depay from behind, but Turner comes up with the left-handed save, and then Sergino Dest fights past another Dutch attacker to clear.
49th min: Chance, USA! CLEARED OFF THE LINE! From a corner, Weston McKennie gets the flicked header to the far post, and Tim Ream is there to poke it home, but Cody Gakpo saves it before it can trickle over the line. SO close yet again!

48th min: The U.S. starts this half with a good chance, coming off a long throw from Weston McKennie, but Andrias Noppert is there with a punch. Down the other end, Tim Ream steps up to make an exceptional tackle to prevent a Dutch counter.
46th min: Changes for both teams, and the U.S. fans finally get what they want. Gio Reyna is ON for the United States, replacing Jesus Ferreira, who was no effect up front. Reyna or Weah will play as a False 9.

The Dutch bring on Teun Koopmeiners and Steven Bergwijn, replacing Davy Klaassen and Marten de Roon. Bergwijn’s dangerous, the U.S. will have to be careful.
HALFTIME: USA 0-2 Netherlands
The United States had some really good moments in that first half, but the Dutch only had two big chances, and as they have all tournament, they finished both. Memphis Depay put them in front, and then Daley Blind delivered an absolute heartbreaker right on the stroke of halftime.
Gregg Berhalter would have felt somewhat comfortable about going into the break down one, but a 2-0 deficit is a massive mountain to climb. It’s a long way back for the United States against a mostly comfortable Dutch defense. Pulisic’s early miss looms VERY large.
The Netherlands are 18 matches unbeaten, and they haven’t lost to a non-European opponent at the World Cup since 1994. The U.S. will have to defy history if they are to come back in this one. Expect changes after the break from Berhalter.

USA vs. Netherlands: First half
45+1 min: GOAL! NETHERLANDS! Oh that’s an absolute GUT PUNCH for the United States as the Dutch score with possibly the final kick of the half. The defense is all over the place and Daley Blind finishes from almost an identical spot as Memphis on the first.
Blind surprised Dutch-born Sergino Dest with a run across his face to the penalty spot, and he was free for his first international goal in eight years.

45th min: It’s end-to-end stuff now. The U.S. has another great buildup but Sergino Dest’s shot is blocked. That springs a Dutch counter-attack with Cody Gakpo down the right flank, but Tim Ream shields him off enough for his teammates to recover, and then Antonee Robinson stops his cross into the area. The pace has picked up tremendously here towards halftime.
One added minute before the break.
43rd min: Chance, USA! ANOTHER SAVE NOPPERT! Tim Weah produces a piledriver on the volley, but the Dutch goalkeeper makes his second huge stop of the half, diving down to his left to parry the effort. Excellent hit by Weah, better save.

42nd min: It’s a glorious chance created by Tim Weah on the dribble down the right cutting in, but he takes one too many touches and is left to emergency touch to Jesus Ferreira. The U.S. striker also takes a poor touch, and the chance fizzles out without a shot.
38th min: A really good burst from Yunus Musah carrying the ball forward sees him cut back for Christian Pulisic then Jedi Robinson, who sends in a cross, but Sergino Dest can’t get his head to it. For the most part, the Dutch look comfortable sitting back and absorbing pressure, cutting off passing lanes and leaving the U.S. with very few options to progress.
33rd min: The U.S. look extremely sloppy in midfield, where they’ve been the best this tournament so far. Adams is maintaining his important level, but Weston McKennie and Yunus Musah have been very loose in possession and second-best to every challenge.
Through the first 30 minutes, Weston McKennie + Yunus Musah for #USA vs. #NED
28 touches
12 lost possession
0/4 ground duels

13/20 passing (65%)— Kyle Bonn (@the_bonnfire) December 3, 2022
29th min: A nervy moment in the U.S. penalty area as Memphis appears to have a chance to rip a shot, but Walker Zimmerman does exceptionally well to shield him off, conceding a corner. The first one is cleared, out for another, which is aimed for Virgil van Dijk, but Zimmerman clears.
27th min: The U.S. continue to search for more chances but have a difficult time finding a way through this stout Dutch defense. A YIKES moment from Matt Turner as a heavy touch nearly falls to a lurking Dutch attacker, but he clears and gets away with it.
21st min: Memphis has a hit on the U.S. goal from an insanely tight angle and deep distance, and it goes well wide across the face of goal. Cody Gakpo’s unhappy with that audacious effort.
18th min: The U.S. has maintained its high energy since the goal, with the Netherlands absorbing some pressure in the U.S. attacking third. Still no more chances on goal, however.
Depay’s goal, meanwhile, moves him clear into second all-time for the Dutch national team, as his 43rd international strike, passing Klaas-Jan Huntelaar.

10th min: GOAL! NETHERLANDS! The Dutch side goes in front! Memphis Depay finishes off an incisive counter that leaves the U.S. defense completely scattered. It comes in from the right flank to Depay atop the penalty spot all alone, and he produces a cool finish. It’s far, far too easy for the Netherlands against a U.S. side that got caught way too high up the field.
Pulisic misses his chance on one end, and the Dutch capitalize on theirs not seven minutes later. That’s how this game goes sometimes, have to be deadly.

8th min: The United States have a ton of pressure in the frontcourt but there’s no goal just yet. Jedi wins a corner which Pulisic delivers well to the far post, but the target Tim Ream is walled off by good Dutch defending. Moments later, Pulisic sends in a cross from the left but it evades the trailing attackers.
3rd min: Chance, USA! SAVE, NOPPERT! Oh no, Christian Pulisic has to score that! He’s clean through on goal, but is stonewalled by the Dutch goalkeeper! The Chelsea man is onside on a ball from Adams that catches the Dutch back line out, but Pulisic’s effort is stopped by Noppert’s leg. That has to go, a HUGE opportunity missed!

USA vs. Netherlands: Pre-match coverage
15 mins to kickoff: It’s been known since April that Dutch head coach Louis van Gaal will depart the national team as soon as their World Cup journey is over. Ronald Koeman has already been named as his successor. Could this be his last game in charge? They’re 18 matches unbeaten under the head man, and surely the Dutch won’t want this to be the first, and the last.

47 mins to kickoff: Sergino Dest will be in focus today as he plays against his home nation. He was born and raised in Holland as an Ajax youth product, eligible for U.S. citizenship through his father. As the players came out for warmups on the pitch, he took a long, introspective moment to himself at the center of the pitch. It’s a big moment for the young full-back who looks to justify his choice and advance to the Round of 16 over a nation he surely holds close to his heart.
UPDATE: Ferreira is actually 2nd to last out.

1 hr from kickoff: There were reports that the Dutch national team is dealing with a flu that’s gone around the squad. On ESPN’s prematch coverage, Dutch presenter Pascal Kamperman stated that it’s not really a flu, but more of a cold brought on by the air conditioning at the facilities in Qatar. They’re downplaying the effect it will have on the players on the field.
1 hr 15 mins from kickoff: The lineups are out, and there are two changes from the USA team that gutted out a 1-0 victory over Iran. Walker Zimmerman comes back into the lineup at center-back, replacing Cameron Carter-Vickers, while Jesus Ferreira gets his first start at striker, with Josh Sargent coming out. Sargent has been deemed unavailable for this match due to his ankle injury.
For the Netherlands, head coach Louis van Gaal names an unchanged side from the team that beat Qatar, meaning Memphis Depay starts up front alongside Cody Gakpo.
Check out our full overview of the lineups & team news below.
1 hr 28 mins from kickoff: Only one player won more tackles across the whole of the World Cup group stage than U.S. captain Tyler Adams, and everything starts with him in midfield. If the U.S. are to win against the Netherlands, it will start with their midfield overwhelming Frenkie de Jong and the rest of the Dutch central players.
1 hr 47 mins from kickoff: The biggest question today, with about 30-45 minutes to go before team news is released, is whether Christian Pulisic will start for the United States. He has been cleared to play by the United States, but that doesn’t mean he’s 100 percent fit. ESPN reporter Jeff Carlisle said he looked “iffy” in training yesterday, but that could just be him trying to take it easy before the match. His status and fitness will be a huge part of the game.
Thought Pulisic looked kind of iffy, especially while cutting. But it was also a warmup so take that for what it’s worth. #usmnt

2 hrs from kickoff: The USA are significant underdogs today but it wouldn’t be a surprise to see them at least push the Netherlands as hard as they did Ghana and Belgium in their last two appearances at the finals.
Both of those games culminated in 2-1 defeats after extra time. How they’d love to exorcise those narrow exits if this encounter goes beyond 90 minutes.
2 hrs 30 mins from kickoff: The Netherlands have not lost in normal time in any of the 10 games they have played under Van Gaal at the finals – although they did fail to qualify for the 2002 tournament as part of his brief first tenure as head coach.
They also achieved what no team at this edition of the finals has done by winning all three of their group games in 2014.
3 hrs from kickoff Good omen? USA captain Tyler Adams’ Leeds United pulled off a huge shock when they beat Netherlands stalwart Virgil van Dijk’s Liverpool at Anfield in the Premier League at the end of October.

The only questions in the U.S. lineup were at center-back and center forward. At the back, Berhalter restores Walker Zimmerman to the startling eleven as Cameron Carter-Vickers, who came in for the Iran match, drops back out.
Up front, Jesus Ferreira earns his first start of the World Cup as he replaces Josh Sargent at the central striker position. Sargent has been deemed unavailable for this match due to his ankle injury suffered against Iran.
Tim Weah and Christian Pulisic remain untouchable in the lineup, as the latter has recovered from his pelvic contusion suffered in the follow-through of his game-winner against Iran, which means Giovanni Reyna continues to bide his time on the bench. Pulisic was cleared to play, but it’s still unclear what level of fitness he possesses or whether he can last the full 90 minutes.
