After fighting for his country against Russian aggression, Ukrainian Vasiliy Lomachenko returns to the ring for some unfinished business. The former WBA, WBO, and The Ring lightweight champion will face off against Jamaine Ortiz on October 29.
Lomachenko returns to Madison Square Garden’s Hulu Theater. This will be his sixth time fighting in New York.
After losing lightweight gold against Teofimo Lopez in 2020, Lomachenko fought his way back to the top. He beat Masayoshi Nakatani and Richard Commey before fighting for Ukraine. The mission is still the same for Lomachenko.
“I love my sport, and I am so glad to be back,” Lomacehnko said in a release. “My goal is to win the undisputed lightweight title, but I will not take Jamaine Ortiz lightly. Madison Square Garden and Hulu Theater at MSG have been special places in my career, and I look forward to making more great memories on October 29. I want to dedicate this fight to all my Ukrainian people. I wear the flag proudly every time I step in the ring.”
With a win, Top Rank’s Bob Arum is hoping to book Lomachenko vs. Devin Haney for the undisputed lightweight titles. Haney beat George Kambosos Jr. twice, the last fight in October to retain the titles he took from Kambosos earlier in the year.
