Wales vs England live: World Cup score, highlights, result as Rashford and Foden fire England ahead

Marcus Rashford and Phil Foden made the most of their elevation to the England starting line-up with quickfire goals at the start of the second half in their World Cup Group B game against Wales.

Rashford and Foden were selected amid four changes made by Gareth Southgate and, after pressing a miserly Wales defence throughout a goalless first half, the Manchester United forward slammed home a superb free-kick.

Foden, whose inclusion had been much clamoured for, converted Harry Kane’s cross at the back post in the 51st-minute to put England 2-0 ahead and on course for a last-16 showdown with Senegal. Rashford will surely fancy his chances of starting that one after adding his second in the 68th minute.

Wales vs. England live updates, highlights from 2022 World Cup

87th minute: Wales pressing until the end. Moore is faced with Stones and gets a shot off. It’s over.

84th minute: A couple of decent moments for Wales as Wilson, on for James, hits a free-kick into the wall before fellow substitute Colwill fires a half-chance over.

82nd minute: Boos ring around the stadium as Gianni Infantino appears on the big screen. Good evening, Mr President! I trust that this evening sir feels neither English or Welsh.

81st minute: A sad sight as Allen, who battled so hard to be fit for this competition, appears to have injured his hamstring. Rubin Colwill comes on.

77th minute: More fine, selfless play from Wilson. Ward saves from Bellingham and the rebound won’t quite fall for Foden. It feels like the last thing Wales need is one of those nine-minutes spells of stoppage time. This risks becoming an ordeal for Rob Page’s side.

75th minute: There’ll be no hat-trick for Rashford, who surely stays in this team for the last-16. On comes Jack Grealish.

72nd minute: Wilson tees up Rashford, who really looks like a player reborn. Ward manages to make the save this time.

68th minute: GOOOOOAAAALLL!!!! Rashford

England play it around calmly at the back. Phillips’ pass down the line is a doozy and Rashford gives Roberts a bit of a roasting but drilling a shot that squirms through Ward’s legs.

61st minute: Ramsey is booked for a pretty rank, frustrated challenge on Henderson.

57th minute: Triple change for England as Phillips and Alexander-Arnold replace Rice and Walker for their first action of the tournament and Wilson comes on for Kane. Joe Morrell is on for Wales in place of Davies, who’s had a bit of a torrid night.

56th minute: Oooh, that’s better form Wales. Moore drops deep, turns and unleashes a drive that Pickford pushes behind. He changed direction well after a deflection off Maguire.

55th minute: Wales have to go for it now without their great talisman. James swings in a tasty looking cross but Pickford tidies up.

50st minuteGOOOOOAAALLL!!!! Foden!!!

England go bang, bang and it’s that man Foden! Rashford involved again as he wins possession high up from Davies. He feeds Kane, who leaves it on a plate for Foden at the far post.

49th minuteGOOOOOAAALLL!!!! Rashford!!!

Wales have defended stoutly, so it was probably going to need some magic and Rashford has come to the party. Ward took a little step to his left and that was his undoing as Rashford’s strike flew over the wall and in.

48th minute: Foden has switched to the left. Mepham doesn’t deal with that problem too well initially and England have a dangerous free-kick just outside the box. Oh for Kieran Trippier to be on the pitch…

46th minute: The big news as we get underway is that Johnson is on for Bale. You’d presume that’s an injury for the Wales captain. And, barring a remarkable turn of events, the last World Cup action of his stellar career.

Halftime: The final action of the half produces Wales’ best moment as England wait for the long throw and get double-bluffed. It’s well worked to Allen who clatters wide from 20 yards.

45th minute+4: Moore wins a flick on for Ramsey. He finds Roberts but Rashford is back to mop up and there’s a bit of pushing and shoving after.

45th minute+3: Shaw pops one into the box but it’s another example of England’s final ball letting them down. Maguire gets them back on the front foot and Kane’s shot is deflected behind for a corner. It’s another deep one from Foden and Ward holds Stones’ header under the crossbar.

45th minute: Henderson thumps one down Ward’s throat from 40 yards. Not sure what the idea is there. There’ll be five additional minutes. Rashford coughs up possession to James and Walker fouls the Wales winger.

43rd minute: Maguire pings an ambitious pass towards Foden, who is on his bike down the right again. There’s too much on it and the attacker cannot hook in a cross.

40th minute: Foden launches into one of those scampering runs, breezes past Davies. He passes to Kane, who works it to Rashford. Wales clear the Manchester United man’s cross behind but it feels a bit like they’re hanging on.

39th minute: Bad news for Wales as Christian Pulisic gives the United States the lead against Iran. It would have been worse news if Marcus Rashford hadn’t just shinned an audacious overhead kick attempt.

38th minute: Moore goes tumbling under a challenge from Rice. The referee waves play on and England break down the right. Bellingham and Foden combine nicely and the latter swivels to shoot over.

36th minute: With that being a concussion substitution, Page still has his allocation of five substitutions available.

35th minute: Williams is having another check following his head blow and it doesn’t look good. Roberts is ready to come on.

31st minute: Calm down, Harry. Maguire is a having a fine tournament but he just went on one of his barrelling dribbles and spanked a left-footed shot out for a throw. Wales fans respond in the pantomime style.

29th minute: After a scrappy few minutes, James is the first man into the book for an untidy late challenge on Stones.

24th minute: Maguire looks like he mistimes his jump and the ball sails over the box. England keep it alive and Rashford unleashes a piledriver. Williams has taken that clean on the top of the head and is receiving treatment. Ouch.

22nd minute: England continue looking to work the openings. Shaw’s cross bounces over Henderson’s head. The Liverpool man gets involved in the next phase and has a low centre cleared. He then wins a free-kick on the right off Davies.

18th minute: Floated to Maguire, who gets up for the head and thinks he should have a corner. The officials disagree.

17th minute: Foolish foul from Mepham, who brings down Kane 25 yards from goal. It’s off-centre to the left. To ease Wales nerves, Shaw, Foden, Rice and Henderson are all over it and seemingly coming up with a plan on the fly.

14th minute: The set piece is partially cleared and falls to Foden. He takes a touch and fizzes a left-effort from 25 yards. It’s not a bad one, not far wide, but he’s pinged a few of those in for Manchester City.

13th minute: Walker fizzes a crossfield ball to Shaw and his fellow fullback draws a handball from Williams. England have a free-kick in a useful position on the left

11th minute: Foden and Walker combine, the latter pulls the ball back to Henderson, whose cross is cleared. England quickening the pace.

10th minute: Ward into the game with an excellent save. Kane drops deep in his signature style and slides a pass through to Rashford – probably not the last time we’ll see that combination tonight. The Leicester City goalkeeper stands firm to repel the Manchester United forward’s shot.

7th minute: England look very intent in their pressing on the odd occasions they don’t have the ball, something Foden and Henderson should both enhance.

4th minute: Plenty of early possession for England with Wales happy to sit in and contain. They don’t appear to be chasing the four-goal win just yet.

1st minute: We’re underway after both teams take a knee before kickoff.

5 mins from kickoff: Here come the teams for the anthems. England won 2-1 when they met at Euro 2016 and Wales then beat Northern Ireland 1-0 at the same tournament. England then drew 0-0 with Scotland at Euro 2020. In short, these all-British clashes tend not to be straightforward for anyone involved.

15 mins from kickoff: For all the focus on Bale and Ramsey, Kieffer Moore has probably been Wales’ most effective attacking threat during this tournament. The hulking Bournemouth striker changed the whole complexion of the game when he came on at halftime against the United States and was involved in most of fleeting good moments against Iran. His battle with Harry Maguire, who appears to have shrugged off his dire Manchester United form. Promises to be intriguing.

40 mins from kickoff: It obviously doesn’t pay to look any further ahead than a match of such expected intensity, but I’m a live blogger rather than an international footballer, so I can do what I like. Wales ditching 5-3-2 and asking James and Bale to go for it down the flanks could serve as a useful preparation for a potential quarterfinal showdown with France. Yes, we’re getting way ahead of ourselves there, but that’s probably a reason why Walker is starting tonight. The Manchester City man would almost certainly be on Kylian Mbappe detail and would not want to be thrown into that cold.

1hr from kickoff: Wales need to win and potentially win big tonight and boss Rob Page is going for it. There are three changes to the side that lost to Iran, with the influential Joe Allen introduced in midfield and Dan James bolstering the attacking options. Danny Ward, in for the suspended Wayne Hennessey in goal, will play behind a back four rather than a back five by the looks of things.

1hr 15 mins from kickoff: The England team is as expected, with Walker, Henderson, Foden and Rashford in for Trippier, Mount, Saka and Sterling.

1 hr 45 mins from kickoff: Wales’ two world-class talents of this memorable era have come in for their share of criticism recently. Gareth Bale and Aaron Ramsey have looked like shadows of their former selves at times in Qatar. Bale won and converted a memorable penalty to snatch a draw against the United States but he was peripheral in the defeat to Iran, where Ramsey was part of a midfield that was out-worked and out-played. Still, if any opponent is likely to dredge up one last herculean effort from Wales’ two superstars, it’s probably England.

2 hrs from kickoff: It’s all over in Group A. The winners of England and Wales’ group will face Senegal. England remain favourites for that spot, while Wales’ most plausible route through is to beat the Three Lions and hope the USA and Iran draw. If all that happens, they will be on course to face Group A winners the Netherlands.

2 hrs 30 mins from kickoff: The final games in Group A are into their second halves. The Netherlands are coasting 2-0 ahead and confirming Qatar’s status as the worst World Cup host team of all time. That will seal a passage as group winners for Louis van Gaal’s side, who will face the runners-up in England and Wales’ section. A draw tonight would be enough for Gareth Southgate’s men to top the group and Ecuador and Senegal are duking it out for the right to face the Group B winners. Kalidou Koulibaly has just given the African national a 2-1 lead a few moments after Moises Caicedo equalised for Ecuador, who only need a draw to progress.

3 hrs 15 mins from kickoff: Is it unfair to say actor Michael Sheen turned in the best World Cup performance of a Welshman so far in 2022, following his spine-tingling monologue to inspire his countrymen? Either way, I feel fired up just typing this and knowing what I’m about to plonk on the page (Dom’s page, not Rob’s page, alas).

3 hrs 45 mins from kickoff: At every tournament, England seem to have a clamourman (that’s what I’m calling it, work with me). At Euro 2020, it was Jack Grealish, back at France 98, Glenn Hoddle was under pressure to field benched duo David Beckham and Michael Owen. From a Three Lions point of view, all of the build-up to this game has been dominated by talk about Phil Foden. Check out the article below for a dive into why Southgate hasn’t been picking the Manchester City star and why he probably should.

4 hrs 30 mins from kickoff: For England, the permutations are simple: win the game, and they win the group. Even a draw would be enough to send them through — in fact, only a huge defeat in this match would see them fail to qualify. It gets a little more complicated for Wales: a win would be enough to get them into the last 16 if USA and Iran draw, but if there’s a winner in that other match, Rob Page’s men will have to beat England by at least four goals to reach the knockouts.

5 hrs from kickoff: Hello, and welcome to The Sporting News’ live coverage of Wales vs. England as the home side look to pull off a miracle in order to progress to the knockout stages. Let’s get going!
