Wales vs England live: World Cup score, highlights, result from 2022 Group B match

England have all but wrapped up a spot in the Round of 16 of the 2022 World Cup, and they’ll be looking to cement their place in the knockouts by seeing off Wales.

Their United Kingdom counterparts need a miracle to progress, sitting bottom of Group B having picked up just one point so far.

Wales must win to have any chance of going through. A victory would be enough if Iran and USA draw, but if one of those teams wins their match, Rob Page’s men would require a win by four goals or more to reach the knockout stage.

England can top the group with a victory and still qualify with a draw.

Wales vs. England live updates, highlights from 2022 World Cup

1 hr 45 mins from kickoff: Wales’ two world-class talents of this memorable era have come in for their share of criticism recently. Gareth Bale and Aaron Ramsey have looked like shadows of their former selves at times in Qatar. Bale won and converted a memorable penalty to snatch a draw against the United States but he was peripheral in the defeat to Iran, where Ramsey was part of a midfield that was out-worked and out-played. Still, if any opponent is likely to dredge up one last herculean effort from Wales’ two superstars, it’s probably England.

2 hrs from kickoff: It’s all over in Group A. The winners of England and Wales’ group will face Senegal. England remain favourites for that spot, while Wales’ most plausible route through is to beat the Three Lions and hope the USA and Iran draw. If all that happens, they will be on course to face Group A winners the Netherlands.

2 hrs 30 mins from kickoff: The final games in Group A are into their second halves. The Netherlands are coasting 2-0 ahead and confirming Qatar’s status as the worst World Cup host team of all time. That will seal a passage as group winners for Louis van Gaal’s side, who will face the runners-up in England and Wales’ section. A draw tonight would be enough for Gareth Southgate’s men to top the group and Ecuador and Senegal are duking it out for the right to face the Group B winners. Kalidou Koulibaly has just given the African national a 2-1 lead a few moments after Moises Caicedo equalised for Ecuador, who only need a draw to progress.

3 hrs 15 mins from kickoff: Is it unfair to say actor Michael Sheen turned in the best World Cup performance of a Welshman so far in 2022, following his spine-tingling monologue to inspire his countrymen? Either way, I feel fired up just typing this and knowing what I’m about to plonk on the page (Dom’s page, not Rob’s page, alas).

3 hrs 45 mins from kickoff: At every tournament, England seem to have a clamourman (that’s what I’m calling it, work with me). At Euro 2020, it was Jack Grealish, back at France 98, Glenn Hoddle was under pressure to field benched duo David Beckham and Michael Owen. From a Three Lions point of view, all of the build-up to this game has been dominated by talk about Phil Foden. Check out the article below for a dive into why Southgate hasn’t been picking the Manchester City star and why he probably should.

4 hrs 30 mins from kickoff: For England, the permutations are simple: win the game, and they win the group. Even a draw would be enough to send them through — in fact, only a huge defeat in this match would see them fail to qualify. It gets a little more complicated for Wales: a win would be enough to get them into the last 16 if USA and Iran draw, but if there’s a winner in that other match, Rob Page’s men will have to beat England by at least four goals to reach the knockouts.

5 hrs from kickoff: Hello, and welcome to The Sporting News’ live coverage of Wales vs. England as the home side look to pull off a miracle in order to progress to the knockout stages. Let’s get going!

Wales vs. England lineups, team news

Wales head coach Page will be forced to tweak his side as they look to go for the win against England.

England projected starting lineup (4-3-3, right to left): 1. Pickford — 2. Walker, 5. Stones, 6. Maguire, 3. Shaw — 22. Bellingham, 4. Rice, 8. Henderson — 20. Foden, 9. Kane, 11. Rashford
