Western Digital Prepping Fix for Faulty SanDisk SSDs

Western Digital will release a firmware update to fix an issue with its SanDisk Extreme and Extreme Pro SSDs that have left some unreadable.

As Engadget reports(Opens in a new window), the issue primarily affects 4TB but also 2TB Extreme V2 and Extreme Pro V2 portable drivers.

Plenty of disgruntled SanDisk owners are voicing their complaints on social media(Opens in a new window). One Redditor noted how his 4TB drive erased all the data he had uploaded, an event that’s been repeated for countless others over the last couple of months.

Western Digital broke its months-long silence on the drive issues on Friday when it told Ars Technica(Opens in a new window) it had a software update finished and ready for 4TB Extreme and Extreme Pro owners. “Western Digital is aware of reports indicating some customers have experienced an issue with 4TB SanDisk Extreme and/or Extreme Pro portable SSDs (SDSSDE61-4T00 and SDSSDE81-4T00 respectively),” the company said.

It added: “We have resolved the issue and will publish a firmware update to our website soon. Customers with questions or who are experiencing issues should contact our Customer Support team for assistance.”

As Engadget notes, Western Digital did not reveal when the update would arrive or if the company was planning on a fix for 2TB models. Western Digital did not immediately respond to PCMag’s request for comment.
