What happened to Allen Robinson? Sean McVay explains lack of WR usage in Rams blowout loss to Bills

And here’s to you, Mr. Robinson?

Viewers checking out Thursday night’s Rams-Bills matchup noticed a very familiar pattern: The Matthew Stafford to Cooper Kupp connection. It happened a lot: Stafford spammed Kupp, connecting with the receiver for 13 catches and 128 yards in the 31-10 blowout loss.

Fans also noticed something else: New Rams wide receiver Allen Robinson, who was expected to emerge as a 1A wideout for Stafford and the Rams offense, was actually not noticeable. Robinson caught one pass for 12 yards in the loss.

While Sean McVay has typically architected top-flight offenses utilizing all of LA’s chess pieces on the board well, that wasn’t the case for Robinson on Thursday night. In pretty vague terms, McVay explained what went wrong:

“We didn’t get into much of a rhythm tonight, so it was tough to get anything (going). I’d like to get Allen more involved, I’d like to get a lot more guys involved. But overall, it was a tough night for us, and it was poor night in terms of the overall decision making from my standpoint,” McVay said post game.

McVay called the loss a “humbling experience,” and that he would look to get Robinson more involved in the coming weeks, along with running back Cam Akers. It’s also important to note that both players were all systems go for Week 1 and didn’t come out of the other end injured.

To McVay’s point, the typically potent Rams offense were unable to get anything going during the game: The Rams were outmatched along the offensive line, allowing 7 1/2 sacks, while Matthew Stafford threw three interceptions in the process. Former Ram Von Miller gave added two sacks of his own in the win.

As a side note, this is the first time during McVay’s career that teams he’s coached is under .500 — that dates back to when he got the job in 2017. So, one bad outing shouldn’t sound the alarms just yet.

Fantasy owners should hope for a better outing in Week 2, though.
