What’s the Most Hated App in Your State?

Hate is a strong word. And yet it can be apt even when applied to small things like apps. Electronics Hub decided to measure sentiment(Opens in a new window) around apps, and it found that a few in particular generate some very strong feelings.

To determine how people feel about apps, Electronics Hub analyzed geotagged tweets about cryptocurrency, dating, entertainment, money transfer, and social media apps and found that some are universally disliked. Across the United States, the apps that caused negative feelings in the largest number of states are Tinder (21 states), Reddit (seven states), Snapchat (six), Roblox (five), and Facebook (three).

Opinions vary widely by state. Alaska hates Netflix; coincidentally (or not?), it also has the slowest internet service. Delaware uniquely hates Amazon. Maine has split its enmity between Amazon Prime Video and TikTok. And though the dating app that gets the most swipes left of any app across the country is Tinder, Pennsylvania has called out Bumble. (It knows why.)

On a state-by-state basis when it comes to dating, OKCupid is not a match in 21 states, Hinge in 11 states, Tinder in eight states, eharmony in four states, and Plenty of Fish in three states. That may say more about dating than the apps themselves, though.

Among social media apps, Facebook Messenger is loathed in 21 states. Facebook itself was the most hated social media site in just two states (Nebraska and West Virginia), but that could be a sign of its diminished use. Twitter (also known as “this hell site” by its denizens) caused rancor in 15 states and was used at the highest rates in media-heavy cities including New York, Los Angeles, Houston, and Chicago.

In bad news for the metaverse, Roblox is pretty well despised in seven states (and the most hated gaming app in the world, according to Electronic Hub’s study). That’s probably fair, though, because the real world could well be the most hated app in the metaverse.
