The College Football Playoff rankings are primed to become the single-most-heated topic of discussion through the remainder of the 2022 season.
As is tradition.
Several teams are primed to take one of the four coveted Playoff spots in the first set of rankings, including defending national champion Georgia in the top overall spot. The usual suspects of Ohio State and Clemson are likely to be well-represented as well. Michigan will also make a rare — but not unprecedented — appearance.
One team that does stand out as a new addition is No. 3 Tennessee, whose several ranked wins this year (including over then-No. 3 Alabama) make the Volunteers the early darling of the College Football Playoff in 2022.

Alabama is on the fringe of the top-four discussion, as are a couple of Big 12 and Pac-12 teams. It stands to reason that the final top four teams of the season will comprise those already mentioned, and several games among those programs will be telling on who’s on the outside looking in.
It all starts with the first set of rankings. Here’s everything you need to tune in and see what teams are positions where in the last stretch of the year:

Projected CFP rankings: Who are the top four teams in college football?
1. Georgia (8-0)
2. Ohio State (8-0)
3. Tennessee (8-0)
4. Michigan (8-0)
The Sporting News projects only two conferences to be represented in the top four teams of the initial Playoff rankings. No. 1 Georgia and No. 3 Tennessee out of the SEC, and No. 2 Ohio State and No. 4 Michigan of the Big Ten.
That Playoff almost certainly won’t play out, considering each of those teams must face each other in the regular season and still play in conferences that use divisions. However, it’s possible that all but one of those teams make the Playoff in 2022, depending on how the regular-season and conference championship games play out.
