When are World Cup squads announced?

Most national teams are expected to announce their initial World Cup squad a month before the tournament.

This means squads for most teams should start being released from October 20 onwards.

It’s been reported by The Telegraph that Gareth Southgate will name the England squad on October 21.

AP News, meanwhile, have claimed the United States side will be announced on November 9.

Expect most other nations to confirm their lineups in between these two dates.

When is the deadline for World Cup squads to be confirmed?

While there is no set date for nations to announce their squads, all teams must be finalised with FIFA by November 13.

There is some slight wriggle room though with sides able to bring in a replacement player 24 hours before their first match should an original squad member get ruled out with injury or COVID-19.

Any replacement has to come from a nation’s initial release list of players which FIFA recently increased from 35 to 55

How big can World Cup squads be in 2022?

Finalised World Cup squads in 2022 can consist of no more than 26 players.

This is an increase from 23 for previous tournaments and is largely the result of the ongoing disruptive impact of COVID-19.

Teams are also now allowed to have up to 15 substitutes on their bench for matches with five substitutions allowed to be made during a game.
