Where Will ChatGPT End Up Next? Here It Is Powering Interactive 3D Characters

Might ChatGPT one day power 3D characters? One company is exploring the idea by integrating the AI program into a holographic rabbit.

Holographic display maker Looking Glass today debuted “Uncle Rabbit,” a 3D cartoon rabbit that can operate on the company’s products. It’s adorable, sure, but it stands out by being able to hold conversations with the user, much like OpenAI’s ChatGPT.

Looking Glass CEO Shawn Frayne demoed an interaction with the 3D character running on the desk-friendly Looking Glass Portrait display. Frayne asks Uncle Rabbit to complete the lyrics to the song “Never Gonna Give You Up.” The character recognizes the song, and creates its own made-up, rabbit-themed lyrics that rhyme with the rest of the tune—”or how about never gonna nibble grass, never-gonna hop too fast”—while the software animates the rabbit on the display.

In another demo, a Looking Glass employee asks Uncle Rabbit various questions, which the character answers. But unlike ChatGPT, which often tries to maintain a neutral tone, Uncle Rabbit responds with its own personality, which is obsessed with acquiring carrots.

“Well, hopping carrots, I may be a hologram in the digital world, but I don’t know much about other holograms. I’m too busy chasing after virtual carrots, and munching on pixels” he says at one point.

The technology seems to leverage how ChatGPT can mimic someone’s personality while generating a response. For example, you can instruct the program to write articles in the style of former President Donald Trump or Star Wars character Emperor Palpatine, and it’ll do just that.

Looking Glass calls Uncle Rabbit the company’s first “conversational holographic being.” But for now, the company is remaining mum on when it’ll be released to the public, although an email sign-up page(Opens in a new window) has been created to learn about future upgrades. OpenAI also didn’t immediately respond to a request for comment.

Still, the project shows how ChatGPT could easily expand to games by powering various characters. In addition, the technology could supplant the virtual assistants on smart displays and smart speakers with a more capable AI that contains some personality.
