Which team is Daniel Ricciardo racing for next year? Latest updates on the Australian F1 driver

Daniel Ricciardo is having another underwhelming year with McLaren following a rocky debut season with the UK-based team.

Sporting News has all the latest updates regarding the 33-year-old’s status for the 2023 season.

Will Daniel Ricciardo race for McLaren in 2023?

Daniel Ricciardo and McLaren have mutually agreed to cut the Australian’s deal short, with Ricciardo to depart the team at the end of this current season.

The 33-year-old was initially on a three-year deal through to 2023.

McLaren has since brought in young gun Oscar Piastri, with the former F2 and F3 champion announced in September after a contract dispute involving Alpine.

IndyCar racers Pato O’Ward and Colton Herta were also touted as options.

Ricciardo has had a mixed recent few years in Formula 1, controversially moving from Red Bull to Renault in 2019, before making the switch to McLaren in 2021.

24/08/22: McLaren announce Ricciardo exit after the 2022 season

After several months of speculation, McLaren have now announced that Daniel Ricciardo will leave the team at the end of the current 2022 Formula One season.

The team’s press release states that both the team and Ricciardo have mutually agreed to end their partnership in the sport.

Speculation will now turn to whether the veteran Australian driver will remain in the sport next season and which seat he’ll take up if so. Alpine are said to still be the most likely landing spot for Ricciardo next year, though reports now suggest that Haas may also be in the market.

21/08/22: Ricciardo takes defiant stance amid speculation

Despite the likely driver merry-go-round, Ricciardo has re-stated his firm belief that he has a future in F1.

“I could probably keep going, but there are a few things [to consider],” he told Speedcafe

“I believe I still thrive off it because I still believe I belong [in F1] and can do it.

“That’s what really gets me jacked.”

16/08/22: Schumacher makes bold claim on Ricciardo’s future

Ralf Schumacher has had his say on the developing Daniel Ricciardo situation, stating that he does not believe the Australian has a future in Formula 1.

“Personally, I can’t imagine that he’ll get another chance in Formula 1. But I wouldn’t know who Alpine should take at the moment.”

Schumacher was also adamant that Piastri will not drive for Alpine next season, despite the young Australian spending 2022 as the team’s reserve driver.

10/08/22: $21m payout requested by Ricciardo

Daniel Ricciardo has requested compensation of US$21 million if he is to terminate his contract before the end of 2023, according to Speedcafe.

It is understood the Australian driver is the only party who can break the contract unless there is a breach of terms by the driver.

The Speedcafe story also underlines that McLaren will receive a refund on the payout to Ricciardo based on his salary at another F1 team – if he is to secure a seat the following season.

07/08/22: Ricciardo to be replaced at McLaren according to reports

According to multiple reports from AutosportESPN and Racer, Daniel Ricciardo has been informed of McLaren’s decision to replace him in 2023 with fellow Australian Oscar Piastri.

It is understood that McLaren wants to ensure Ricciardo has a seat at a different team prior to announcing the signing of 21-year-old Piastri.

Neither party has made an official statement.

03/08/22: Piastri contract saga to potentially impact Ricciardo

The messy contract situation of fellow Australian Oscar Piastri could see Daniel Ricciardo out of a seat at McLaren.

Alpine announced the 21-year-old as a driver for the 2023 season, but Piastri was quick to deny the news.

A move to McLaren – where he would likely replace Ricciardo – has been rumoured as a potential option.

Ricciardo and McLaren are yet to make an official statement on the matter.

13/07/22: Ricciardo makes social media statement, committing to McLaren

Daniel Ricciardo has taken to social media to clarify his position at McLaren, also stating he will remain in Formula 1 for the foreseeable future.

“I am committed to McLaren until the end of next year and am not walking away from the sport,” he wrote.

“Appreciate it hasn’t been easy, but who wants easy!”

08/07/22: Brown confirms Ricciardo will see out contract

In an interview with Fox Sports’ Jessica Yates, McLaren CEO Zak Brown has confirmed that Daniel Ricciardo will stay with the team until the end of his contract.

“Oh yeah. He’s a fighter, and his results since we’ve said [previous critical comments] – that’s not how they were intended – have been much closer to Lando, and he beat Lando, so maybe there was something … firing him up,” Brown said.

“We love working with him. He loves the team. We’ve seen when we give him a car that’s capable of winning, he can win in it.”

10/06/22: Ricciardo has no doubts about future

At the Azerbaijan Grand Prix, the Australian driver expressed he has no doubts he will be driving for the team in 2023, despite constant rumours he will be replaced next season.

“The clarity is there for us moving forward, my contract is clear with the team for next year, I’m fully committed, I’ve certainly voiced that,” Ricciardo said.

“Obviously now, it’s [about performing] on track, and showing these moments, these races I know I’m capable of, and I do truly believe I have the full support of the team, and we want to do it together.”

03/05/22: McLaren eyeing future replacements

Zak Brown explained on the F1 Nation podcast that negotiations for Ricciardo’s contract will take place later this year.

“We have another year together, we do like to think long out, hence doing some testing with Pato [O’Ward],” Brown said.

“We’re going to do some testing with Colton [Herta], we’ve got Ugo [Ugochukwu] in Formula 4, who put it on pole at his first race. So I don’t think you can ever plan too early, but there’s no rush.

“His race days have been very strong, much better in qualifying. Listening to him earlier this week with the team, I think he still doesn’t feel he’s 10 out of 10 on top of the car, but he has got a great relationship with Lando [Norris], and he knows the team well.”
