Who is Bryce Perkins? Meet Rams QB filling in for injured Matthew Stafford, John Wolford

The Rams were placed in an unenviable position on Sunday, being forced to play their third-string quarterback.

Bryce Perkins was called into action in the third quarter of Los Angeles’ game vs. New Orleans after starter Matthew Stafford left the game and was placed in concussion protocol; it was Stafford’s first week back after missing Week 10 vs. the Cardinals, also for being in concussion protocol.

Normally John Wolford would be the team’s No. 2 quarterback, but he is out as well with a neck issue (despite being a full participant in practice). He is coming off a game in which he completed 24 of 36 pass attempts for 212 yards and one touchdown to one interception vs. the Cardinals.

Enter Bryce Perkins, who had all of one pass this season as he entered Sunday’s game in place of the injured Stafford.

Here’s everything you need to know about the third-year quarterback.

Who is Bryce Perkins?

Perkins is a third-year who was an undrafted free agent out of the 2020 NFL Draft.

He signed with the Rams but was waived during final roster cuts ahead of the 2020 season, instead signing with the team’s practice squad. He was briefly elevated to the active roster for the team’s Week 17 and divisional playoff games against the Cardinals and Packers in January, though he reverted back to the practice squad after each game.

Perkins signed a reserve/futures conference with the Rams on Jan. 18, 2021, and was among the players who received a Super Bowl ring after the team’s victory over Cincinnati.

The Rams’ signal-caller had a college career that saw him redshirt at Arizona in 2015 and miss the 2016 season there with a broken neck. Due to NCAA transfer rules at the time, he was ineligible to start immediately at another FBS school, and therefore spent a season at Arizona Western College, where he passed for 1,311 yards and seven touchdowns, adding 353 yards and four more scores.

He finished his college career at Virginia, where he was named the team’s starter in 2018. He started all 13 games that season, setting the program record for single-season offense offensive production (3,603 yards) and 34 touchdowns: He passed for 2,680 yards and 25 touchdowns, rushing for 923 yards and nine scores.

Perkins returned in 2019 and was again a starter, this time for 14 games. He threw for 3,540 passing yards and 22 touchdowns to 12 interceptions, adding 227 carries for 769 rushing yards and more 11 scores

Bryce Perkins stats

Perkins had only one pass to his name this season, which came in Week 10: 1 of 1 passing for minus-3 yards.

Perkins’ college stats saw him complete 544 of 844 (64.5 percent) for 6,210 yards and 47 yards to 21 interceptions in two seasons. He also rushed 439 times for 1,692 yards (3.9 yards per carry) and 20 touchdowns in that time.
