Price changes aren’t always a reaction to results: France were briefly considered less likely to triumph than they were after the draw for the finals was made – unsurprising given their long list of injuries, including to Ballon d’Or winner Karim Benzema – but are now short again.

When Japan took a 1-0 lead against Croatia in their Round of 16 match, their odds became half the price you could get on their opponents, who were semifinalists in 2018. Their penalty shootout travails mean they are out and Croatia are among the dark horses to win.

Who will win the World Cup? Favourites in 2022

Despite that defeat to Japan, Spain are fifth-favourites after crushing Costa Rica 7-0 and drawing 1-1 with Germany, who surprisingly went out at the group stage.

Fourth-favourites England looked far more impressive than they had in previous months when they hammered an Iran side who were 20th in the world 6-2 to start their campaign.

A 0-0 draw with the USA drew criticism for the Three Lions in England, but a slick second-half display against Wales earned them a 3-0 win and they followed it up by thrashing Senegal 3-0 in the Round of 16.

FIFA World Cup winners

Of the 32 teams involved, seven had hoisted the World Cup before.

Unsurprisingly, all seven of those teams appeared among the top 10 favourites to win this year’s edition, as World Cup tradition runs deep.

Below is a table of previous World Cup winners involved in the 2022 field. The only team to have previously won a World Cup who did not qualify for this year’s field is Italy. The Azzurri have won the World Cup on four previous occasions.
