Why Brandon Marsh’s hair always looks greasy during Phillies games: ‘It’s called having some f—ing edge’

Gotta love the Grease.

Since entering the league in 2021, Phillies centerfielder Brandon Marsh has earned a reputation as one of the league’s true fielding savants. He ranks in the 95th percentile in Outs Above Average, according to Baseball Savant.

What’s more impressive? That Marsh makes web gems like this look easy, all while sporting perhaps the wildest combination of facial and head hair the league has ever seen.

Marsh has long resembled a caveman. But even among the league’s furry-faced fixtures — guys like Paul Blackburn, Charlie Blackmon and Luis Guillorme — Marsh stands out. That’s because of his hair.

You see, Marsh doesn’t just have long hair. He has long, greasy hair. Like really greasy. Like just hopped out of a scalding hot shower greasy.

It’s a deliberate choice on Marsh’s part, one that has helped endear him to his Philadelphia teammates, as well as the Phils’ faithful.

So just how does Marsh get himself to look like the human embodiment of Phillie Phanatic? Well, Sporting News has you covered.

Why is Brandon Marsh’s hair so greasy?

Marsh’s hairdo looks so greasy because … it is. Well, sort of.

Marsh is a fan of a wet-looking locks. So much so, in fact, that in between every inning, Marsh dumps obscene amounts of water on his head to create that slick, greasy effect.

It’s a pretty gnarly process, admittedly. It’s made all the more grody by the fact that Marsh isn’t one to cleanse his hair properly all too often. Marsh told Fox Sports’ Jake Mintz that he only washes his hair once a month. Oh well.

Nonetheless, Marsh says it gets the job done. His crazy coiffure is maintained by the simple elixir of water and…more water. Marsh spurns products and conditioners, preferring the natural look of his wet hair.

Although it may be aesthetically pleasing (or displeasing, depending on who you ask), Marsh says his slicked-back mane has some real purpose to it.

“If I don’t wet it,” Marsh said, “it gets super bristly out there. I don’t like it that way. I like it wet.”

Look good, play good. You have to respect it.

Ultimately, Marsh’s expressive hairstyle has made him a hit around the locker room. Just ask Phillies backup catcher Garrett Stubbs.

“It’s called having some f—ing edge. That guy knows how to find his f—ing edge.”

Philadelphia right fielder Nick Castellanos was a little less bold in his assessment of Marsh, whose smooth and soaked hairdo is only surpassed by his fielding skills and speed on the base paths.

“There’s a real camaraderie we have as a team,” Castellanos said. “When Marsh came over here, we told him, like we tell all our guys: Come in, be yourself, whatever that may look like or sound like. No one is going to judge you in this room.”

Brandon Marsh with long hair

Since entering the major leagues, the Phillies’ base bandit has had a crazy hair-beard combo. His facial hair is that of a Union general in the Civil War, bristly and bushy and quite possibly filled with warlocks and ghouls.

Marsh’s flow has largely stayed the same as well. In the minors, he sported a slightly shorter cut. But the lettuce still billowed in the warm summer breeze. And his hairdo still retained that signature Marsh slickness he so enjoys.

His days with the Halos’ big league squad did little to curb his crazy growth. Here’s how Marsh looked in Angels’ red. Peep the similarities between Marsh and a long-haired dachshund:

After a disappointing spell in La La Land, Marsh headed to the City of Brotherly Love in the Noah Syndergaard trade. He proceeded to find more success at the plate than he ever has before, posting a solid .773 OBP in 41 games with the Phils — all while maintaining his elite play with the glove.

Oh, and Marsh’s hair remained both outrageously thick and outrageously slick. No need to mess up a good thing.

Brandon Marsh with short hair

Given how long Marsh has sported a gangly hair-beard mix, it’s hard to imagine there being a time when he didn’t have an absurd amount of fur on his head. But we were all quirky, clean-shaven teenagers at one point in our lives, even Marsh.

Check it out:

Even in Marsh’s early days in the Angels’ organization, he hadn’t quite reached peak “Castaway.” It seems he settled more for a short hair, longer beard combo a la Travis Kelce. Whatever floats your boat, I guess.

It seems Marsh has finally found his rhythm on and off the field. And as long as Marsh is making plays on both sides of the diamond, it’s likely Phillies fans won’t really care what he’s rocking.
