Why isn’t Paige Bueckers playing vs. Texas tonight? UConn star out for season with ACL injury

When No. 6 UConn takes on No. 3 Texas in one of the first marquee matchups of the women’s college basketball season on Monday, the game will be missing one big star.

UConn junior guard Paige Bueckers will not be available against Texas as she is out for the season with an ACL injury.

Bueckers has had an injury-riddled college career ever since her freshman season when she became the first freshman in women’s college basketball history to take home both AP and Naismith Player of the Year awards. She averaged 20 points, 5.8 assists and 4.9 rebounds in her first college season, but hasn’t played a full season since then.

The 21-year-old missed the majority of her sophomore season and now will miss the entirety of her junior season due to injury. Here’s everything you need to know about Bueckers’ injury.

Paige Bueckers injury update

Bueckers will be out for the entire 2022-23 season after tearing her left ACL during a pick-up game in the offseason.

Bueckers suffered a torn ACL on Aug. 1 and received surgery on her left knee on Aug. 5. This is the second major injury of her college career, as the UConn star also suffered a tibial plateau fracture and meniscus tear midway through her sophomore season, which also required surgery.

Following her latest injury, Bueckers made it clear that she intends to rehab her injury and get back on the court for Connecticut next season.

“I’m not leaving,” Bueckers told the media ahead of the season. “I will be playing college basketball again.”
