Why Thomas Morstead’s ‘butt punt’ may go from making fantasy players laugh to making them cry with recent rescore

The Dolphins made the funniest play of NFL Week 3, with Thomas Morstead kicking a ball square into the butt of his personal protector.

The play ended up being a safety, but the Dolphins got the last laugh in a 21-19 victory that sent Bills offensive coordinator Ken Dorsey into a fit of rage.

It was jokes all around, but the NFL has neutered the comedy behind it to some people. Morstead’s mishap was rescored to a punt for -1 yards from a block, as it was self-inflicted, leaving wide-ranging effects on teams with both the Dolphins and Bills defense and special teams.

If there’s comedy to be found in that, it’s the thought of NFL scorers poring over the tape of that punt wondering what in the world to do about it.

Morstead, for his part, was not happy with the effect of the rescore.

There is something amusing about the league going with the outcome that negatively effects both sides in this case.

It does have major effects on Morstead as well, as a -1 punt can have huge consequences on his net average. Morstead, to his credit, did immediately make up for the mishap with a monstrous free kick down to the Bills’ 6-yard line that was taken to their own 23.

If this lost anyone their fantasy league, it’s a shame to see such a wonderfully stupid play become tainted with that memory. But remember. Fantasy is for the season. The butt punt is forever.
