A woman has become concerned after finding a meal receipt for £180 in her husband’s pocket despite him saying they do not have the money to eat out. The woman took to a Mumsnet post to explain that the pair do not have a lot of money between them as they have struggled with the cost of living crisis.

In the post, she explained: “My husband has been using the fact that we’re struggling like everyone else financially to not do things together like date nights anymore. No dinners or trips out, etc as we ‘can’t afford it’.” However, the wife recently found a receipt in his coat pocket for a meal costing £180 which he supposedly shared with a friend.

“Two meals multiple courses, Bottle of wine, the works. £180,” explained the woman.

But her husband had only told her he spent just £15 on a curry on his way home from seeing the friend.

According to the post, the two have been struggling recently and this receipt has given her cause for concern.

“He’s been off with me recently because I’ve been a bit consumed with my parent’s problems (they are not coping with cost of living at all and I think my dad might be dying slowly),” she explained.

“He says I haven’t been ‘present’ enough at home or giving us or the home enough attention. I feel sick and so sad since I found it, I haven’t said anything to him. I’m approaching 40 and don’t have much of my own.”

The wife is now worried about why her husband has kept this from her and is unsure as to how to bring it up with him.

In response, many have been quick to agree with the wife that this is difficult behaviour to understand with some concerned he is lying to her.

One person wrote: “That seems like a very expensive meal for two mates. Combined with him being off with you lately, it would set alarm bells ringing for me. Is he secretive with his phone?”

While another said: “The lying is a big red flag. He needs to explain himself. BTW prioritising dinner with his friend instead a date night with you I’d be questioning too.”
