Will the Steelers start Kenny Pickett over Mitch Trubisky in Week 4? Mike Tomlin has a ‘definitive’ answer

There seems to be a Pickett fence surrounding the Steelers’ quarterback situation.

Pittsburgh’s offense had another forgettable performance as the team lost 29-17 at AFC North rival Cleveland on “Thursday Night Football.” With veteran Mitchell Trubisky at the helm and 2022 first-round pick Kenny Pickett waiting in the wings, some have been pining for a QB change to give the offense some life.

A change doesn’t appear to be happening anytime soon.

Steelers coach Mike Tomlin was asked after the game whether he’s considering making a change at quarterback or offensive coordinator during the team’s extended layoff before its Week 4 game. He gave a direct answer:

“I’m not in that mindset,” Tomlin said. “I’m interested in reviewing this tape and looking at the totality of it and figuring out how we collectively get better. So [the] answer to that question is definitively no.”

So, there you have it, Steelers fans: Trubisky will remain QB1 and Matt Canada will remain the offensive coordinator and play-caller.

Tomlin’s devotion to a veteran passer isn’t new. Tomlin made it clear at various points in the 2021 season as Ben Roethlisberger’s career wound down that he preferred an experienced QB. It may be a while before Pickett makes his way to the field.

Trubisky wasn’t necessarily the reason the Steelers sputtered Thursday. He went 20 for 32 for 207 yards, with no touchdowns or interceptions. He was victimized by bad drops by some of his receivers.

So while fans continue to clamor for Pickett, Trubisky will, for now (and for later), remain at the top of the depth chart.
