A pregnant woman claims she was left astonished after her mother-in-law sneakily took her portion of food from a family meal she herself had cooked, only to be unable to finish it and ask for a doggy bag
After rustling up a family meal Swedish meatballs in gravy with mashed potato, broccoli, and homemade bread, a stunned woman says she couldn’t believe her eyes when her mother-in-law pinched her share. According to this peeved home cook, she’d dished out “generous portions” for her children, husband, and mother-in-law before heading out to fetch some clothes from the line.
When she returned to grab a plate for herself, she was confused to find her own portion had disappeared from the bench where she’d left it and asked her family whether they’d seen it. It was then her mother-in-law piped up, explaining she’d “wanted some more” and so helped herself.

Taking to Reddit – where she goes by the username u/notahip – the frustrated woman expressed her astonishment at realising her mother-in-law had “piled her bowl full of meatballs”, with the amount being “way more than she would ever eat.”
She wrote: “I’m stunned. I figure oh well. I’ll just grab some fast food a bit later or something because maybe she was super hungry. My bad for not cooking enough.
“But once she’s eaten what she wants, she asks for a container so she can take her extra portion home for dinner the next night. I’m pretty annoyed at this point and mention that it was meant to be my dinner for that night, not her takeaway meal for the next night. She says ‘oh well you can eat it then’ and I reply with ‘no thank you’, and hand her a container. ( I didn’t want to eat her leftovers.)”
The mother-in-law left with her takeaway container, and – after the kids were put to bed – the woman’s husband went to ask her what was wrong. She explained she was hungry and also angry at not having been able to eat the meal she herself had cooked. Her husband agreed his mum had been “greedy and selfish”, and texted her to let her know she owed his wife an apology. She responded furiously.
The fed-up woman continued: “She replies telling him that I acted like an a******, I should have cooked more and anticipated that she would take home a portion for the next day, she offered me what she didn’t eat and I didn’t want it.
“It’s not her fault and that I owe her an apology for my attitude and snarky comment. She’s also posting on social media about what happened and people are saying that I’m an a****** and a rude hostess.”
Turning to fellow Reddit users to get their thoughts on the matter, the unnamed woman added that she is pregnant and does feel she can be “quite unreasonable at times due to hormones.” However, many people felt they could read the mother-in-law’s intentions like a book, viewing this as a case of gaslighting, not hormones.
One person commented: “Reading your replies, you know she did this on purpose, right? She wanted to start this fight with you. She took all of the food before you had eaten any, and then demanded to take leftovers. She’s f****** with you. Don’t ever cook for her again.”
Another said: “Seriously, for the rest of our life if we were having dinner I would probably decline to allow her to stay citing that, “I didn’t make enough dinner to feed you for the rest of the week, so we don’t have enough for you to stay for dinner.”
