If you don’t like to throw things away, clearing out your wardrobe is one of the hardest tasks going. While tidying up is never the most fun in the first place, it’s normally easy to figure out what to keep and what to throw away. But when it comes to sorting through clothes, it’s not always so straightforward.
Obviously, you don’t need five pairs of faded jeans, but you might need that pair of dungarees in the future. Sure, you haven’t been to a rave in years, but what if you regret binning those neon leg warmers?
Thankfully, there’s an easy tip you can use when tidying up, courtesy of @lilliewhitelock, and it will save you lots of stress.
Rather than umming and ahhing about which items to save, she recommends letting your fashion sense decide for you. Simply turn your clothes hangers so they are all facing in the same direction, then swap the hanger around each time you use its corresponding item.
Then, at the end of six months, you can see which clothes you haven’t touched in an age, hopefully helping you to decide what to put on the discard pile.
The minimalist-loving mum shared the trick on TikTok in a video devoted to decluttering. Her other tips for clearing out your wardrobe include keeping your outfits versatile, but not building up a ‘fantasy wardrobe’ full of clothes you’ll never wear.
Her last suggestion – one we all ought to pay attention to – is to consider donating anything you’re getting rid of. She recommends leaving a ‘donation tub’ in your wardrobe for ease.
The informative video racked up over 40,000 likes from delighted viewers, many of whom hope to try out the tips. Praising the advice, one commenter said: “Thanks for the inspiration! I need to go through my wardrobe and donate ASAP.”
Another replied: “I think my donations containers will easily be full after seeing this,” while a third said: “I am 100% minimising my wardrobe in 2023.”
