Knowing what Christmas presents to buy your friends, family and partner can be tricky without a set list. While many couples prefer to ask for specific gifts or give subtle hints, others request a surprise under the tree. One woman has revealed a ‘genius’ trick to ensure her boyfriend buys her a present she actually wants – but it’s dividing people online.
The idea was shared on Twitter by a user who earwigged a conversation and couldn’t believe her ears. The tweet read: “I just overheard a woman say she uses her boyfriend’s laptop to Google Christmas presents she wants so that he gets targeted ads. Communication in the digital age: a love story.”

The viral tweet has amassed 96,000 likes and sparked conversation between thousands of users online.
Some people praised the woman she quoted and expressed their amazement at her modern-day thinking.
“Work smarter, not harder,” someone simply put, and another said: “That women is ahead of her time. Pure genius.”
“Brilliant! She gets what she wants and he gets to feel like he’s the best gift selector ever,” a third wrote.
“I’m about to log in to my man’s Google account and do just that,” a fourth tweeted.
Though others agreed it ruined the act of surprise and gave off red flags about their relationship.
“Hmm…. communication, or manipulation?” one person questioned. “Either way, it is brilliant, but it feels dirty.”
“Smart but if her partner doesn’t know what she likes I can’t imagine they have a particularly strong relationship,” another said.
“These are the people who are like ‘marriage is such hard work’… Like she could literally just talk to her partner and tell them what she likes/wants,” a user commented.
One person suggested she make an Amazon Wishlist and another shared an alternative way, admitting: “I scream things I want at or near my wife’s phone.”
However, someone explained that technology is actually ahead of her idea – so she might not even need her boyfriend’s laptop.
“Nowadays your phone suggests ads that people you’ve been hanging around with a lot have been Googling, it shares that data between phones. They’re one step ahead!” they said.
