Amid the current cost of living crisis, Brits are understandably trying to save every little penny they can. While there are plenty of money-saving hacks being shared, there’s only so much people can do to tackle surging prices for petrol, gas and electric, as it’s beyond their control. It’s safe to say that food costs have also taken a hit, as one woman was gobsmacked after discovering the substantial cost of her takeaway.

The anonymous user took to popular forum Mumsnet, explaining that she was keen to enjoy one of Britain’s most loved and iconic dishes – the classic fish and chips. However, she detailed her utter shock and “agog” in the post after being blown away by the cost of her entire order, which totalled to £37.

The woman titled the post: “To be agog at the price of dish and chips?”

She explained: “Don’t have stuff from the chippy very often, but went today. Standard takeout place in the north.

“We ordered: Two x fish and chips, one x pie and chips, one x curry sauce, four x tom sauce packets, and three x drinks.

“It cost £37!” She exclaimed.

“Is this really how much they cost now or were we ripped off?”

“We stopped getting Chinese takeaways some time ago once the dishes got close to £10,” she added.

The cost of the common takeaway sparked a series of responses in the comment section as people shared their thoughts over the arguably expensive price.

One person claimed: “That does seem a little expensive, I’m West Midlands and it would probably be around £25-£30 here.”

“If it’s a full-size cod I don’t think that’s bad. It’s probably around £5-£6 here for a mini fish special,” a second said.

A third wrote: “I’d imagine the drinks were pretty pricey? £37 is expensive – but fish is expensive generally so I’m not surprised.

“£5 for a decent-sized cod fillet at my local fishmonger, so not sure you could make a portion of fish and chips at home for a lot cheaper than the takeaway.”

Clearing up the reaction from users, the woman finalised her thoughts of the cost: “So between average and a little expensive then but not excessive. Ouch.

“It was nice but added to the occasional treat list then.”
