Every team still had something to play for as we headed for the home stretch today, when the final round of group-stage matches at Qatar 2022 began.
Groups A and B kicked off the action on Tuesday, with the Netherlands facing host nation Qatar, who were looking to avoid the ignominy of three straight defeats on their first-ever run at the finals.
For the Dutch, they knew anything other than a big loss would be enough to go through, but behind them there was a real battle brewing for the runner-up spot, and Ecuador faced Senegal knowing that the winner was also guaranteed to go through.
The fact that games are played at the same time in the final round of group matches to ensure sporting integrity only adds to the tension, and it was palpable also in Group B, where England had almost done enough already, but not quite.
The Three Lions knew that only a heavy loss, of four goals or more, could deny them a place in the Round of 16, but they wanted to finish on a high. Not least, because their opponents were British rivals Wales, who themselves knew that anything less than a win would see them go home.
The other Group B clash saw USA take on Iran, in a match that had already stoked the tensions of US-Iranian relations off the pitch.
The USMNT were free-flowing in their 0-0 draw with England and, in truth, probably did enough to win that game. But with the pressure on, now was the time for Gregg Berhalter’s men to deliver.
When it comes down to it, the equation for the USMNT was a simple one: win, and they were in. But Iran wanted nothing more than to steal that place.
