Couple hailed as ‘best thing’ at World Cup

During the World Cup, all eyes are on the pitch as football fans eagerly watch to see whether or not it will in fact be coming home.

However, during a match between Croatia and Brazil on December 9, viewers watching live on television couldn’t help being distracted, as the camera’s focus strayed from the players to a couple in the stands.

A clip of the unknown pair has since gone viral online after a fan filmed his screen while watching coverage of the game on BBC.

Shared by a Twitter user named @acevengecko and reposted on the popular Instagram account @thearchbishopofbanterbury, the video shows a man holding up his phone to the woman sat next to him, so she can use the camera to apply liquid eyeliner.

A few seconds into the clip, the man appears to catch someone’s attention offscreen and can be seen smiling and winking at them.

Almost immediately after he winks, the woman looks up from doing her make-up and faces him and it’s fair to say she doesn’t look too impressed – whether this is about the wink, or him moving his phone is unclear.

A voiceover on the clip by @acevengecko jokes that the man has been “busted” over the wink and many people in the comments couldn’t help but agree with this take.

Viewers thought she had ‘busted’ him over the wink – but some thought it was more innocent than that

Some claimed the woman must have “superpowers” with one person saying: “Crazy how your woman got superpowers to know when you on some bs.”

Another agreed, writing: “Bruh fr she wasn’t even looking at him, how tf did she know??”

The original post was captioned: “Best thing I’ve seen at the World Cup so far.”

People had a lot of thoughts on the candid moment, with someone else posting: “Bruh scared for his life.”

However, others merely saw a man doing something nice for a woman and praised him for holding the camera up for her.

“What a guy,” said a different user.

“Don’t settle ladies,” urged a second.

While a third thought: “Would not want to be him in the ‘lads’ WhatsApp group today.”

Meanwhile, a few social media users weren’t impressed by the ‘drama’ Twitter seemed to be stirring up over the clip as they thought there was a much more innocent explanation behind it.

“Realistically from the body language it kinda looks like he was saying hello to someone he knows and then told her who it was when she asked why he moved the camera, but y’all do love some drama on Twitter to feed into your biases,” a fellow viewer tweeted.
