Brazil were the pre-tournament favorite to win the 2022 FIFA World Cup and their first match of the tournament only served to back up that consensus take.
The Selecao have a chance to claim a Round of 16 berth with a win over Switzerland on Monday days after overrunning Serbia 2-0 in their opener behind two Richarlison goals. However, an ankle injury to Neymar has put a damper on their strong start.
Next up it will be Switzerland‘s turn to try to slow down the South American giants. The Swiss started their tournament with a tidy 1-0 win over Cameroon courtesy of a goal by Cameroon-born Swiss forward Breel Embolo. It was a Swiss performance that was more efficient than impressive, with Cameroon generating a handful of dangerous looks.
The second round of matches got started with Cameroon and Serbia playing to a 3-3 draw and the point each does little to help their chances of qualifying. Both will need to win their final match to have any hope. Cameroon will be facing Brazil and Serbia will take on Switzerland in those group finales.
As things stand and barring any surprises, that final group match between the two European teams — Serbia and Switzerland — will likely determine the second team to advance to the knockouts alongside favorites Brazil.

- Points obtained in all group matches
- Goal difference in all group matches
- Number of goals scored in all group matches
- Points obtained in the matches played between the teams in question
- Goal difference in the matches played between the teams in question
- Number of goals scored in the matches played between the teams in question
- Fair play points in all group matches (only one deduction can be applied to a player in a single match):
- Yellow card: −1 point;
- Indirect red card (second yellow card): −3 points;
- Direct red card: −4 points;
- Yellow card and direct red card: −5 points;
- Drawing of lots.

Do third place teams advance at World Cup 2022?
The format of the 2022 FIFA World Cup calls for only the top two teams in each group to advance to the knockout rounds. Third-place teams are therefore automatically eliminated.
