Tesla aims to start mass producing its Cybertruck at the end of 2023.
Citing “two people with knowledge of the plans,” Reuters tips(Opens in a new window) another year’s wait for the million-plus potential buyers who’ve paid $100 to reserve a sharp-contoured electric truck.
Unveiled in 2019, the vehicle looks like a 1970s concept of the future, with its wedge-shaped design, stainless-steel skin, “unbreakable” glass, and companion ATV. Tesla’s grand plan to begin production in 2021 was pushed back to 2022, and now, 2023.
During an earnings call last month, Tesla CEO Elon Musk said the company is in the “final lap” and is currently building the Cybertruck at its Austin, Texas, facility. “Yeah, that car’s gonna be sick,” Musk told investors. “Hall of famer. Next level. Sorry it took longer than expected, but there were a few things that got in the way, like insane global supply chain issues.”
Tesla plans to start “early production” in the middle of next year, Reuters reports(Opens in a new window).
Cybertruck comes with rear-wheel drive, 250 miles of range, and a towing capacity of 7,500 pounds. A more expensive version includes a dual motor, all-wheel drive, 300-mile range, and 10,000-pound towing capacity.
In the three years since its reveal, the $40,000 EV’s price tag has increased, thanks to inflation and “various issues,” Musk announced in August. Final figures have not been released.
