Following the Nintendo Direct yesterday, it was confirmed that The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom will be Nintendo’s first $70 Switch game as predicted. However, it’s also going to be Nintendo’s biggest Switch title in terms of game file size.
As IGN reports(Opens in a new window), the eShop listing(Opens in a new window) for Tears of the Kingdom states the game file size as 18.2GB. That’s small when compared to games on other consoles such as the PS5 and Xbox Series X, but big for a Switch game. There are some much larger Switch games available, but all are third-party titles such as NBA 2K21, which is over 41GB(Opens in a new window) in total.
Until now, the biggest first-party game Nintendo had shipped seems to be Breath of the Wild, which comes in at 14.4GB. The much more recent 60+-hour Xenoblade Chronicles 3 experience is also only 14.38GB. Pokemon Scarlet and Violet are only 7GB each.
The extra 4GB of data points to improved visuals compared to Breath of the Wild, as the trailer above suggests, but also a much larger world and more gameplay to enjoy. That will definitely help Switch owners stomach the $69.99 price tag, while also helping Nintendo to pay for the large cartridge this game will require for the physical version.

The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom launches on May 12, but is already available to pre-order in digital form on the Nintendo Switch eShop. Physical version pre-orders should become available imminently.
