Zoom Video Conferencing Is Coming to Tesla Vehicles

Ever wanted to a hold a Zoom meeting in your car? Tesla buyers will soon be able to do just that.

Video-conferencing provider Zoom demoed the feature during the company’s Zoomtopia event on Tuesday. “We’re going to make it even easier for you to Zoom from anywhere,” says Nitasha Walia, group product manager at the company

In the demo(Opens in a new window), Zoom shows a woman messaging with a colleague on her smartphone. While recharging her Tesla at a charging station, she then proceeds to hold a Zoom video call using the vehicle’s touch-screen display.

Zoom refrained from saying much else about the upcoming feature, including whether the video call uses the Tesla’s built-in cabin camera(Opens in a new window) over the rearview mirror, or a different camera to record the user. It’s also unclear if the feature needs a nearby Wi-Fi connection, or if it can tap Tesla’s Premium Connectivity plan.

Walia merely says “this will be available on all new Tesla models soon.” She also teased the integration will be designed to sync with the rest of your Zoom account.

“Soon, you’ll be able to hop over from your car, your desk, or wherever you are into a Zoom room, and seamlessly transfer your meetings, your whiteboard, your Zoom applications with you to the room,” Walia adds.

Tesla itself previously hinted that Zoom was coming to the company’s cars. According to Drive Tesla Canada, the company published(Opens in a new window) a promotional video in February, which showed the Zoom app running in a V11 software update for the vehicles. In 2020, Tesla CEO Elon Musk also tweeted(Opens in a new window) that video conferencing was “definitely a future feature” coming to the company’s cars.

The feature will arrive as Zoom has been steadily expanding its video-conferencing software to other platforms including on select smart TVs(Opens in a new window) and even in movie theaters.
