Canada’s Border Control: Is Free Speech Getting ‘Canceled,’ For Real?

Date:

Recent events at Canada’s borders have many folks in North America raising an eyebrow, questioning the nation’s commitment to free speech and open discourse. What’s been going on with Canada’s Border Control is, straight up, alarming. Invited international scholars and speakers heading to the Muslim Association of Canada’s (MAC) annual convention in Toronto reportedly faced some seriously intense immigration scrutiny. This included delayed electronic travel authorizations, cancelled visas, and even hours-long interrogations at airports without basic courtesies like water or a prayer space. It’s giving ‘political profiling,’ and many are wondering if Canada is lowkey using its borders to police solidarity with Palestine.

Among those targeted were figures like Ebrahim Rasool, a South African anti-apartheid veteran, and British commentator Anas Altikriti, who allegedly endured 11 hours of questioning. Before them, French Palestinian MEP Rima Hassan was denied entry, and former UN Special Rapporteur Richard Falk and his wife faced detention for hours. The common thread? Public criticism of Israeli policy or involvement in Palestine-related advocacy. These aren’t isolated incidents, dude; they reveal a pattern where dissenting voices on a contentious international issue are seemingly flagged as ‘security threats,’ which is pretty sketchy if you ask me.

Canada often prides itself on being a beacon of multiculturalism and human rights on the global stage, a place where diverse viewpoints are supposedly welcomed. However, this emerging pattern at its border checkpoints paints a different picture, one that feels decidedly less ‘on point’ with that image. It suggests that certain political perspectives are triggering heightened scrutiny, morphing what should be a robust democratic exchange into something that feels more like ideological litmus tests. This hits different when you consider the nation’s foundational values of free expression.

This isn’t just happening out of nowhere, either. For years, a network of pro-Israel advocacy organizations and lobbying groups has actively worked to marginalize Palestine solidarity activism across Canada. Groups like HonestReporting Canada and B’nai Brith Canada have been highkey pressuring universities, media, and government institutions to cancel speakers or stigmatize criticism of Israel. While these groups absolutely have the right to advocate for their beliefs, the concern arises when their lobbying efforts appear to directly influence state actions, blurring the lines between legitimate security concerns and suppressing political thought.

What’s particularly worrisome is how this trend mirrors a broader crackdown on dissent across much of the Western world. From Germany banning Palestine solidarity demonstrations to aggressive targeting of students and academics in the U.S., the weaponization of state powers—including immigration law and institutional pressure—against critical voices is becoming normalized. This trajectory is not just about a specific issue; it’s about the fundamental health of democratic societies. When governments begin to informally police political thought at the border, the scope of acceptable dissent for everyone inevitably narrows, and that’s a legit cause for alarm.

For many Canadian Muslims, this moment feels like a painful echo of the post-9/11 era, when communities faced surveillance and conditional belonging. Decades were spent rebuilding trust, and now, fears are bubbling up that those same instincts are returning under new pretexts like ‘combating extremism’ or ‘fighting antisemitism.’ While antisemitism is a real threat that must be seriously confronted, using its accusation to silence legitimate criticism of Israeli state policies is, quite frankly, a dangerous play. It doesn’t make anyone safer; it just shrinks the democratic space and risks alienating citizens who feel their voices are being silenced. Periodt.
