A house in Mammoth Lakes was destroyed by an explosion Saturday — 10 days after a similar blast a mile away injured five people.
The weekend’s blast happened around 1:30 a.m. Saturday on Juniper Road, a loop of single-family homes near Mammoth Mountain ski resort’s Eagle Express lift. The house was unoccupied at the time and no injuries were reported, the Mammoth Lakes Police Department said.
The resulting fire and the snowmelt flooding caused by that fire prompted the evacuation of nearby residences, including condos at the Eagle Run complex.
On March 22, an explosion caused the collapse of a building at the Val d’Isere Condominiums, near the Mammoth Village commercial area. Three people were trapped and had to be extricated; five people were injured, one of them critically.
No announcement has been made about the cause of either blast, but police and fire officials have warned residents to make sure their propane tanks, pipes and valves are free of snow and ice, which can cause damage that results in a gas leak.
The main lodge at the Mammoth ski resort has recorded 58 feet of snow this season, the most in the resort’s 65-year history.
