A bride says she was left furious after her husband-to-be returned her dream wedding dress, swapping it out for the “creepy” one his mum had preferred. Now he’s pleading with her to go along with his mum’s “vision”

A bride-to-be claims she was left livid after learning her own fiancé had taken her wedding gown back to the shop, swapping it out for the one his mum had set her heart on. According to this fuming bride, her future mother-in-law “is the intrusive type”, however she is generally nice and they usually get along fine.
Unfortunately, wedding planning has proven to be a bit of a “nightmare”, with her husband-to-be’s mum unwilling to agree on the majority of decisions. Things got even worse after she insisted on coming along dress shopping, only to point blank refuse to accept the dress the bride had chosen.

Taking to Reddit, where she goes by the username u/Throwaway9757657, the 28-year-old woman wrote: “I was so lucky to have found what I was looking for, but she picked a dress that she liked so much and said that ‘she always pictured her son’s bride in it’.
“My mum and friends thought this line was creepy. I thought the dress was somewhat creepy and totally not my type. I apologised and thanked her for her ‘vision’ but told her that I’d already decided on a dress that I had ‘envisioned’ myself wearing at my wedding!”
That same evening, her fiancé came home completely enraged, ranting about how she’d “turned down” his mum’s help in choosing the dress and thus “excluded her from the process.” He asked her to consider his mum’s choice of dress instead, arguing, wrongly, that the two gowns weren’t all that different.

The matter was dropped following their argument, or so she’d assumed. The following evening, she came home to find her dress had been taken back, with her mother-in-law’s preferred dress in its place.
She continued: “I called him and he was straightforward about what he did and why he did it. I lost it and started screaming at him. He asked me to calm down and really give this dress ‘a chance’.
“I refused to even listen I screamed at him without giving him a chance to speak. He got home and we had an argument. I then went to stay with one of my friends and he kept calling and calling then texting saying that I overreacted and it’s his wedding too so it wasn’t cool how I screamed at him.
“He insisted I give this dress a chance. He went on and on about how his mum has a ‘vision’ and good intentions and just wants what’s best for me as her future daughter-in-law.”
The bride’s mum is seething over the groom’s mum’s behaviour, but her dad feels she should just “go with the flow” so as to avoid ruining her relationship with her future in-laws. She’s now conflicted and has turned to her fellow Reddit users for advice.
One person commented: “Hand him the ring back. Say ‘I hope you get the wedding you and your mom have always hoped for’. Walk away.”
Another urged: “To your mother-in-law, you are not a person. You are an accessory that attaches to her son’s arm. If your fiancé isn’t willing to stand up for you and himself, you will have to get used to having her run your lives from here on out.”
