Samsung will use Corning’s Gorilla Glass Victus 2 in its upcoming flagship devices, which likely includes the Galaxy S23 expected to be announced on Feb. 1.
The scratch-resistant Gorilla Glass Victus 2, announced in November, can survive drops of up to 3.28 feet onto hard surfaces like concrete and up to 6.5 feet on surfaces like asphalt.
In a nod to the welfare of the planet, the latest iteration of Gorilla Glass is said by Corning to also include an average of 22% pre-consumer recycled content. This, according to Samsung EVP and CMO Stephanie Choi, is one reason why the phone maker partnered with Corning again.
“We’re committed to integrating sustainability throughout our product lifecycle, working with like-minded partners such as Corning to improve performance while reducing our environmental impact,” she said in a statement. “Our next generation of Galaxy flagship smartphones are the first devices to use Corning Gorilla Glass Victus 2, offering better durability and improved sustainability at the same time.”
“Today’s consumers expect damage-resistant smartphone displays,” said David Velasquez, VP and General Manager of Gorilla Glass.
