Crypto.com Sues Woman After Accidentally Sending Her $7.2M

Cryptocurrency trading platform Crypto.com is suing an Australian woman to whom it accidentally transferred $10.5 million AUD (about $7.2 million USD) instead of the $100 AUD ($68 USD) refund she requested.

As 7News reports(Opens in a new window) (via Decrypt(Opens in a new window)), Thevamanogari Manivel requested the $100 AUD refund in May 2021, but Crypto.com transferred $10.5 million AUD into her account. Why so much? Because whoever processed the refund accidentally entered an account number into the payment field.

The company didn’t notice its mistake until an audit was carried out in December. Meanwhile, Manivel treated the millions as a gift and transferred $10.1 million AUD into another account and used $1.35 million AUD to purchase a five-bedroom luxury home in Craigieburn, Victoria, for her sister, Thilagavathy Gangadory.

Legal action has been taken by Crypto.com in an attempt to recover the funds. So far, Victoria’s Supreme Court has ruled that the property must be sold and the proceeds of the sale returned to the company. If Manivel and her sister ignore the order, the property may be handed over to a receiver who will handle the sale, while the duo could face contempt of court charges.

The legal battle is set to continue in October with Crypto.com refusing to comment further. It’s currently unclear how much of the money Manivel has left and therefore if the company will be successful in reclaiming it all even if they do win the court case outright.
