England vs USA live score, updates, highlights and lineups from women’s friendly between USWNT, Lionesses

Soccer international friendlies don’t get much bigger than this. It will be the defending World Cup champions against the defending European champions as England host the U.S. women’s national team at a sold-out Wembley Stadium in London.

The buildup to Friday’s match has been overshadowed by the findings of an independent investigation commissioned by U.S. Soccer which found systemic abuse in women’s professional soccer in the USA. In the lead-up to the match, both national teams have faced questions about the report, which has already led to the dismissal of two executives in Portland as owners across the NWSL face increased scrutiny amid calls for accountability.

USWNT veteran Megan Rapinoe said she was looking forward to taking the field and playing soccer, and the match should prove a spectacle given the talent on show. It’s a preview of a potential late-stage matchup at the 2023 Women’s World Cup, where both nations are expected to contend for the title.

England vs USWNT lineups

Injuries to center-back and captain Leah Williamson, Alessia Russo, and Lucy Parker will force England manager Sarina Wiegman into some serious lineup shuffling. Alex Greenwood, a natural left-back, is expected to partner new captain Millie Bright in central defense, with Rachel Daly or Demi Stokes filling in on the left.

With Ellen White now retired and Euros star Russo out injured, the forward line is expected to feature England Women’s Player of the Year Beth Mead, with Lauren Hemp and Nikita Parris on either side of her.

England projected starting lineup (4-2-3-1, left to right): Earps (GK) — Bronze, Bright, Greenwood, Daly — Walsh, Stanway — Hemp, Toone, Parris — Mead.

England subs (12): To be confirmed

The USWNT’s attack will be without starting center forward Alex Morgan (knee injury) and starting winger Mallory Pugh (family commitment). That should see Ashley Hatch line up at central striker though USWNT winger Sophia Smith can also play there. Trinity Rodman or Megan Rapinoe are options to fill in for Pugh. We’ll see if Andonovski gives 22-year-old rising star center-back Naomi Girma a start on the big stage of Wembley Stadium.

USA projected starting lineup (FORMATION, left to right): Naeher (GK) — Huerta, Cook, Sauerbrunn, Fox — Lavelle, Sullivan, Horan — Smith, Hatch, Rodman.

USA subs (12): To be confirmed
