F1 Abu Dhabi Grand Prix 2022 live: Highlights and analysis as Verstappen starts from pole for final race of the season

Max Verstappen will start the Abu Dhabi Grand Prix from pole position after dominating qualifying yesterday afternoon at the Yas Marina Circuit.

The 2021 and 2022 double world champion produced two phenomenal laps to lead from the front throughout Q3 as he looks for his 15th race victory of the season during the final race of  2022 campaign.

His teammate Sergio Perez will also start from the front row as the Mexican driver looks to beat Ferrari’s Charles Leclerc – who starts this race in P3 – to second spot in the overall drivers standings. If he manages to best the Monegasque’s race result today, it will be enough for Red Bull to secure their first ever one-two in the drivers championship.

Elsewhere, it’ll be an emotional day for Aston Martin’s Sebastian Vettel who will be taking part in the final F1 race of his career.

The four-time world champion, who is retiring from motor racing after this season, produced an excellent display yesterday in qualifying meaning that he’ll start his 300th and final race from P9 on the grid.

Daniel Ricciardo, Mick Schumacher and Nicholas Latifi will all also be eager to produce on what is their collective final race for at least a year as all three are without a seat on the grid next season.

30 minutes to lights out: Despite both championships already being decided, there’s still plenty more storylines that need to be finalised this afternoon, not least so the question of who will finish second between Perez and Leclerc.

There’s also plenty of drivers in the midfield battle who could switch in the standings given what happens in this race plus Mercedes can still catch Ferrari for P2 in the constructors race. The fight between Alpine and McLaren will also be decided today!

45 minutes to lights out: Vettel will bow out of F1 as a four-time world champion then and as a driver who is recognised as one of the greatest in the sports history by fans, pundits and his fellow professionals alike.

His time with BMW Sauber, Toro Rosso, Red Bull, Ferrari and Aston Martin has seen him enter 300 Grand Prix, recording 53 wins along the way – the fourth-most in history. The German has also finished on the podium 122 times during his career, a simply remarkable achievement.
