F1 qualifying results: Starting grid for 2022 Dutch Grand Prix as Max Verstappen snatches pole position from Charles Leclerc

A stunning last lap from Red Bull’s Max Verstappen saw the Dutch driver snatch pole position from championship rival Charles Leclerc by just 0.021 seconds as qualifying for the 2022 Dutch Grand Prix provided great entertainment.

It all came down to the wire as Leclerc led during the opening flying laps in Q3 before Verstappen produced a sublime drive at just the right time to claim back-to-back pole positions at home racetrack Zandvoort.

It’s also the seventh time this year that Verstappen and Leclerc have shared the front row as, again, there was little to separate the pair.

Ferrari’s Carlos Sainz rounded out the top three ahead of Mercedes’ Lewis Hamilton in P4 whilst Red Bull’s Sergio Perez finished in P5 despite crashing during his final lap of qualifying.

Heading into the last corner, the Mexican driver caught the curb just too much, which caused a huge spin and subsequently saw several drivers behind have to slow under yellow flags, including George Russell, who had to settle for P6.

McLaren’s Lando Norris continued his strong form this year by taking P7 despite teammate Daniel Ricciardo failing even to make it out of Q1, as Mick Schumacher, Yuki Tsunoda and Lance Stroll all surprised to round out the top 10.

F1 Dutch Grand Prix qualifying commentary, highlights

END of Q3: Verstappen takes pole position for the 2022 Dutch Grand Prix!! Wow, what a run from the Dutchman who records the fastest lap in qualifying by just 0:021 seconds from championship rival Leclerc. Red Bull teammate Perez crashes behind and as such, Mercedes pair Hamilton and Russell have to back off securing Verstappen’s top spot.

5 minutes left of Q3: Verstappen sets the benchmark early on but Leclerc fights back to lead Q3 so far by less than one-tenth. That’s certainly silenced the Dutch crowds for the time being!

START OF Q3: The final session is underway here at Zandvoort. Verstappen still the favourite to take pole position but so far these lap times have certainly been a lot closer than many people were thinking they’d be.

END OF Q2: It’s Sainz who leads the way after Q2 with a 1:10:814 from Russell, though that’s mainly because Verstappen remained in the pitlane instead of putting in another flying lap. Double disappointment for Alpine elsewhere!

Eliminated from Q2:

Pierre Gasly
Esteban Ocon
Fernando Alonso
Zhou Guanyu
Alex Albon

5 minutes left of Q2: It’s Verstappen who leads once again after the first flying laps in Q2 but it’s a bit of a surprise elsewhere as Sainz and Leclerc can only manage P7 and P9 respectively. Aston Martin’s Lance Stroll sits in P4 and continues to look very pacy today.

Plenty of drivers are also continuing to complain about a set of pigeons that have made their home on corner 7. That’s a very brave place to be eating your food!

START OF Q2: Albon is out on track first on a used set of soft tyres though there’s a red flag straight away as someone has thrown a flare onto the middle of the track. The session will resume in four minutes time.

END OF Q1: Verstappen takes top spot from Hamilton in P2 and it’s a surprise in P3 as AlphaTauri’s Yuki Tsunoda takes that place in Q1! At the other end, it’s disappointment again for Australian Daniel Ricciardo who’s knocked out despite his teammate Lando Norris finishing near the top of the lap times. Disappointment too for Vettel as the German driver puts his car into the gravel on his flyer.

Eliminated from Q1:

Daniel Ricciardo
Nicholas Latifi
Kevin Magnussen
Sebastian Vettel
Valtteri Bottas

5 minutes left of Q1: It’s Vettel, Ricciardo, Albon, Schumacher and Latifi who currently occupy the bottom five stops. They’ll all need to improve quickly though the track is getting faster throughout the session.

10 minutes left of Q1: As expected, Verstappen leads the way after all the drivers register their first flying lap.

The Dutchman leads by three-tenths from Mercedes pair Russell and Hamilton.

START OF Q1: Here we go then! Haas pair Kevin Magnussen and Mick Schumacher lead us out.

5 minutes to go: Well we’re all set here at Zandvoort for qualifying for the 2022 Dutch GP. The crowd is going wild as you’d expect as they prepare to welcome the drivers onto the track.

30 minutes to go: Plenty of the chat surrounding the build-up to this year’s Dutch GP has focused on F2 driver Oscar Piastri who has officially now signed with McLaren for the 2023 F1 season.

Of course we know that Alpine had said that Piastri would be joining them for next year though that turned out to be a major blunder and let’s just say, it’s all got a bit awkward between the two mid table constructors at the moment..

45 minutes to go: It was Ferrari’s Charles Leclerc who took top spot in practice three this morning, followed by Mercedes George Russell and home favourite Verstappen. Expect Red Bull to turn the wick up as usual as soon as qualifying commences though.

1 hour to go: F1 returns for a second weekend in a row as Max Verstappen looks to make it four victories in succession at his home Grand Prix. Stay tuned as we bring you all the latest from today’s qualifying!

Formula 1 schedule 2022

There are 22 scheduled events on the F1 docket for 2022, one race shy of tying the mark for longest F1 calendar.

The season started in Bahrain on March 20 and will end with the customary Abu Dhabi Grand Prix, although a bit earlier than usual, in November. If the schedule stands, this will be the earliest end of the Formula 1 season since it ended on Nov. 4 in 2013.

Returning to the 2022 F1 slate are the Canadian and Japanese Grand Prix, both of which were canceled in 2021 amid fallout from the coronavirus pandemic.

The calendar also holds the maiden voyage for the Miami Grand Prix, the first of two races in the United States in 2022, with the customary United States GP taking place in October.

The Russian Grand Prix, originally scheduled for Sept. 25, was canceled because of the ongoing conflict between Russia and Ukraine.
