Many of Gregg Berhalter’s coaching decisions were questioned during the group stage of the 2022 FIFA World Cup, but it’s difficult to argue with the results. He has the United States in the tournament’s knockout stage for the first time since 2014.
Since taking over four years ago, Berhalter has guided the U.S. through the tumult of the COVID-19 pandemic and molded some of the brightest young talent to ever come through the program. The USMNT won the CONCACAF Gold Cup under him in 2021.
The United States has plenty of room to grow, but Berhalter already has the team succeeding on the international stage after going 1-0-2 in the group stage.

DeCOURCY: Time for critics to give Berhalter his due
Berhalter’s contract runs through 2022, so he will be able to negotiate a new salary if both sides want to continue their partnership.
Berhalter said in an interview with Fox Sports in July that he wasn’t ready to commit to continuing on after the World Cup, but he added it would be a “great opportunity” to coach the national team at home during the 2026 World Cup.

While the past four years haven’t always been smooth sailing, Berhalter has achieved the primary goal of returning to the World Cup and advancing past the group stage. If he sticks around for the 2026 World Cup, which will be played in North America, the pressure for an even deeper run will increase with an experienced group of players.
